Hey im new to this forum and looking into buying a chevy luv diesel. However, 5-th gear is out. I am not real familiar with these trucks, but i do have a 1.8L isuzu diesel engine paired with a 5-spd gear box out of a chevette. I know its unlikely, but can anyone tell me if the gear box out of the chevette would be the same as what is in the luv? And is 5-th gear being out common in these trucks?

I would appreciate your help on this! :D

Thanks

Hi ardswa

If memory serves me correct, concerning discussions with JLemond, the Chevette transmission will bolt up to the C223 Isuzu engine in your truck.

I can't tell you if the transmission will fit in the truck, however.

And yes, the 5 speed tranny is the weak link.

You'd be much better off with the 5-speed from a later-model gas Isuzu Pickup. It requires using the bell housing from the diesel transmission, and requires some other work, but it's a much stronger transmission. JLEMOND posted the instructions over on the IsuzuPup.com site (If the one you're looking at is 4wd, this does not apply).

It has a reputation for 5th gear going out. I have heard that one can extend the the life of the tranny by changing the oil every year or 12,000 miles.

I had 5th go out on a diesel s-10. I got a donnor gas transmission and pulled the internals out (gears). But I do belive that the luv transmissio and the s-10 transmission are diffrent.

I have heard that almost any T5 tranny would bolt to the diesel bellhousing... Is this true?. If so ... would the upgraded T56 6 speed bolt up the same way?

The main cause of early failure of the 5 speed trans is shifting into 5th to early.

Could you please expand on that, as my 5th gear is still intact.

I do know there is not a lot of difference between 4th and 5th.

5th gear is overdriven, this means your tailshaft is spinning faster than your engine. If you change into 5th while still accelerating, this loads up the bearings causing unessesary wear. To extend the life of 5th gear you should only shift into 5th once you have reached your cruising speed, you should not accelerate in 5th, change down a gear.

Thanks OzLt. My 5th gear is still good because I tend to follow the procedures you described. On any hill, regardless of the length and slope, I always go into 4th, so I can keep what little momentum I have.

Besides, I do not recall that I ever could ever, actually accelerate in 5th gear.
