I'm tearing my 223 down to replace all seals/gaskets. I've aquired a 5speed4x4 trans from a trooper, and will be putting this in my samurai to have a small diesel 4x4.
Could someone send me a scan of the pump timing procedure? I placed a tight fit shank into the pump pulley locking it, and at this position the cam pulley indicator looks a few degrees advanced past pointing straight at the pump indicator. Using a straight edge through the centerlines.
Also does the campulley fit on the cam with a pin or with a tapered fit like a volkswagen ?
Also what are the three timing marks on the crank pulley? Can't remember what one lines up with the true tdc sitting at the comp, but wondered why more marks than just tdc unless for timing reference.
How many degrees BTDC does the intake lift? Is it just opening or .020,.040 measured lift at X degrees?
Someone has had this engine apart before as there are valve impressions in three pistons it got repaired at some point in time and I want everything just as so. I replaced the nozzles and set break pressure at 1650 and it ran like a new motor no more smoke. It stained the ground black just revving it before, I found an injector someone had loose on the seat and it was FULL of carbon, man would that thing smoke, I had great compression and decided it was worth seals and painting before install.

Thanks
Mike

ok well the timing belt timing is pretty simple, like you said the straight edge thew the center line of the injector pump and the cam is the easiest way to go and then on the crank just line up the key way with the little mark on the timing cover the key way should line up with one of the cog teeth on the gear, the can has a key way and if your going to use the pulley to set the timing I believe its the one in the middle of the 3
