I have a '82 luv with a 2.2L engine. I've owned it since new and except for needing a clutch it runs like a top. The body is getting pretty trashed though.
I recently acquired a 80's 4x4 extended cab s10 with a blown engine. How hard is it to swap the diesel into the S10? Has anyone done this?

Thanks

I'm going to guess that the LUV isn't 4wd, since you didn't mention it.

The S10 was offered with an Isuzu C223 diesel for a few years, but it did not use the Isuzu transmission. If you were mating this engine to a 2wd S10 transmission, you would need at least the bell housing from the diesel S10. Since you're putting it into a 4wd, I don't know if that bell housing will even fit the transmission (and it's quite rare anyway).

I won't say it can't be done, but it sounds difficult.

I just recently did a luv engine to s10 swap I had a complete s10 with a bad diesel in it thought for parts wich made it very easy the bellhousing is the hard part to find if its auto GM didnt make a bellhousing for that as far as I know if you have the T5 with a transfercase on the back of it then you can just change bellhousings and you should be good to go. On the engine you will need a different oil pan, exaust manifold, injector pump (throttle linkage is different, and the injector lines are too) dont know about the air cleaner the accesory drive brackets are going to be different and if the luv didnt have a vaccume pump then you will need one of those or go to hydro boost, a little wiring change the fule neck or knock the restrictor out of it, cap of the vent line from the tank going up to hte engine, may need an electric lift pump (I did), different motor mounts, and a few other odds and ends Im probably forgeting but thats about it if you have a parts truck to work with that would make it much much easier try and find one in a junk yard that there willing to sell for cheap or find some one who has one should be a few out there with blown motors

The first and most important question is what engine came factory in this S10 4x4 you acquired? If by any chance it's a 4 cylinder I'd imagine it wouldn't be too hard to drop the 2.2 diesel in there. Problem is most S10 4x4s I've come across always have a V6 powerplant whether it be the 2.8 or 4.3. I'm not sure how similar the motor mounts are on a factory diesel S10 and factory 2.8 V6 S10, but if the diesel bolts in at the same location it's where you have it made pretty much. I think in this case the transmission will be harder to work out given you are using a 2WD engine into a 4WD vehicle. You'll really need to get this diesel specific GM bellhousing to make the swap go that much easier. And after that I would imagine you could use a form of the T5 transmission that is 4WD. Then you are on you way to go besides the other basic change overs needed to be done in a gas-diesel conversion (like fuel, glow plug wiring, etc.). Good luck with it if you do plan to tackle the job. It should be real interesting too and I'd like to follow it for future knowledge of another possible conversion.

It might be easier to swap the body panels. Turning your LUV into an S-10.

I am not kidding. It might be easier than you think.
