i'm building a 35 Ford pickup hot rod. Was going to put a SBChev in it, but decided to do a diesel. Have a 2.2 Isuzu motor out of a LUV. Want to use a non-world class T-5 tranny I have, but can I use an S-10 4 cylinder (gas) bell housing? Or how do I have marry the 2 together? Welcome to all suggestions--I'm new to diesels in hot rods (though I drive a TDI and a Dodge Cummins). Thanks, Dan, South Dakoter

What you want is a bell housing from an old (1983-1985) S10 diesel. They are not overly common, but they used a T5 tranny hooked up to the Isuzu diesel. This is the setup I used in my S10.

Do you know of anyone who has one of these--an S-10 diesel bell housing? I need major help, if that's the case--I know of no S-10 diesels in these parts. Many thanks, DS :?:

There are National Salvage Parts locators sites.
Search on Google.com Here are a couple I found. Lots more listed.

http://www.partslocator.com/
http://www.partrequest.com/

I am going to puts a olds-chevy 5.7l diesel in my 56 f100. I am also looking at putting a 5.7l in a Luv truck or maybe the 4.3l V6 diesel.

this places makes VW diesel adapters for suziki and also makes one to adapt the diesels including TDI's to a toyota 22r trannies.

Thanks for the info. I spoke with a fellow here today, who like me lives in the hinterlands. He is into tractor pulling and uses 2.2 Isuzu motors. He said he has dynoed 325 HP from one of these motors and raved about its strength and design. He said he ran one to 8K RPM and blew the flywheel in a jillion pieces. He uses Cummins pumps, turbos with high boosts (reduces the compression ratio to 16:1) and all kinds of trick stuff--I found it a very interesting conversation. He is not a BSer (I been around cars long enough to know the talkers and imaginers from the doers). Thanks to everyone who has helped me with this project so far. DS

Dan--

Any way you can get your friend to tell us about his Isuzu upgrades? This is very exciting dope and flys in the face of 'common knowledge' that these engines cannot 'take it'.

Thanks--

Paul

I agree with Paul. I wouldn't mind learning a few tricks on how to upgrade the power and torque on the Isuzu diesel. I'm not interested in doubling the horsepower, but wouldn't mind getting it increased 10-15 horses. What about a header for the C223, I would be very interested to upgrade with that, a 2.5" exhaust, and a performance MagnaFlow muffler all the way back. I know a header is not available, but I wonder how much one would cost to be custom made?? Sometimes I sit and think that it's just not fair that all the gasoline engine options have headers available, but when you go to any 80's Japanese diesel pickup a header is nowhere to be found. :x The only thing I have done to upgrade my 82 LUV diesel is put on a K&N air filter, but I had planned to put on a larger exhaust ever since I got the truck.

The fellow I referenced who uses the 2.2s for tractor pulling said he used a Cummins injection pump (there is a unit that works perfectly according to him), he decompressioned the engine and runs a single turbo (he cannot run more than one and be legal in his pulling class he said). Besides adding a higher profile cam, I think the gist of it is tremendous amounts of fuel and air. He doesn't use these engines for street vehicles so his understanding is alittle different than us street guys. He recommended I add a turbo on my hot rod engine and I asked if anyone made a kit--he said no, but said he thought a Chrysler gas turbo would work. I will have more interactions with him in coming days and will pick his brain. If he offers something helpful, I will post it here. Many thanks, DS

Chrysler use a 2.2 or 2.4 gas engines. I think the new PT's turbos are a 2.4l engines. Don't go too big on the turbo or you will have to wait too long for it to spool up. Thats what makes the VW TDI a great engine, small turbo, no lag, but it will run out of boost at high RPM's. But hey it is a diesel.
