im not sure, but the word bicycle comes to mind...hehe :P

change spark plugs, wires, points, condenser, make sure the carb is running correctly, don't drive as fast.
you could put a higher rear for interstate driving, but not too high because the engine would be working harder to keep up the pace.

are those better than the first idea?

convert it to a propane or used veggie oil truck.

On the diesel side I've also heard people running used motor oil in them. You want to run it mixed with diesel though. Veggie oil alone should also be mixed but you can refine it into biodiesel without a huge outlay of equipment. You do have to be careful with running some of this stuff without refinement as it can cause carbon buildup and shorten the life of the motor.

As for mods/tricks I think about all you can do is free up the exhaust and get a good non-restrictive air filter. I wonder if K&N makes one for the the Isuzu diesel...

Actually I just looked and the diesel uses the same filter as gas LUVs, so the same part should fit. K&N E-2760 is the part number.

Bigger pipes, better flowing muffler. Basically remove restrictions. I'm not really up on diesel performance so I don't know if there is a "too big" on exhaust like there can be on gas motors.

Check your trans and differential fluids. Fresh, correct amount of lube in the drivetrain can only help. Check your brakes for eccessive dragging and repack your wheel bearings to be sure that they spin freely. Tire pressure affects your mileage too.
If the rolling chassis isn't as smooth as it should be, the motor is working harder than it should. This stuff im mentioning wont cost much to check out.

Hydrogen shouldn't explode. I know everyone thinks of the Hindenburg going up in a ball of flames, but
Quote:
Furthermore, the substance used to coat the cotton skin a process known as “doping” which makes the fabric taut and more durable was extremely flammable. A combination of iron oxide, cellulose acetate and aluminum powder, “the total mixture might well serve as a respectable rocket propellant,” Van Vorst said.

Additionally, the manner in which the skin was attached to the airframe allowed a large electrostatic charge to build up on its surface. When it finally discharged, it did so with disastrous results.”

And check this out Hydrogen

The idea of using hydrogen as a fuel is somewhat misleading. Yes, it's a clean fuel source that has no emissions. But the process of manufacturing useable hydrogen creates high emissions output. It's a "catch 22" situation. Yea, it would be cool to see this fuel readily available but it's going to take a while before this happens

Yes, hydrogen can be produced with water and electricity. You could actually do it with a windmill, solar... but collection and storage at home might prove difficult. and when you use it as fuel you get water that'd call for some changes in exhaust construction...
Think I will stick to fossil fuel for the time being :D
