This is why we don't allow gmail. This is off of our server.

We could debate this, but you're the boss here. What do you mean by "spam domains"?

Hotmail is a close second. Considering Gmail probably has way more users, I'd say Hotmail has a bigger problem.

If you're referring to forum spam, there's a better way.

I'm also part of another forum that doesn't allow ANY registrations from third-party email providers. They say to use your ISP and if you can't do that then join some other forum.

Seems a little harsh, but it's effective.

Our setup for new users works well. The first post has to be approved. The only thing that really annoys me about it is when a new user posts the same thing over and over and wonders why it's not showing up.

This is an actual spam count off of our email server over a month period. The spam domains are the domain sources of the originating emails.

You're saying this is a count of spam emails received by your email server? I'm not sure that's going to have any correlation with forum spam, since that's a whole different critter.

I've implemented an anti-spam question in my registration process. I supplied three different questions that any human can answer, but a bot can't. The forum gives one question at random that the registrant must answer. I was getting about 100 registrations per day (99% bots). Now I'm down to about 1-2 per day, and so far--ZERO successful bot registrations. I don't block any domains.

The questions (appropriate for my forum) are really simple:
What was the last year for the Isuzu P'up ("1987")
What was the Isuzu Pickup called from 1988-1995? ("Pickup")
Who was Isuzu's TV spokesman in their early commercials? ("Joe Isuzu").

I actually didn't create an account for almost a year because I couldn't use my gmail. Finally I had to make another email and use it. Glad I did but still it put me off.

Jack, your obviously biased in favor of gmail. I'm guessing you have a phone with an android OS?

We have an anti-spam question here too that has all but killed the forum spamming.

Every once in a while, we turn gmail back on again, and boom, within a couple days, the forum spamming starts again.
And yes, these are actual people, that answer the question correctly and manage to register, and then start their BS after a couple days.

I'll tell you what though. I'll turn it back on again. Any bets on how long it takes this time?

No, I have an iPhone. But I like Gmail. I initially chose it because they were early adopters of using secure connections. As you can see, my email doesn't use the Gmail domain. I do use their services, but using my own domains. If that means I'm "biased", so be it.

I'm pretty surprised to hear that your forum spam is from human members. I think we've had that happen once or twice, but not enough to prompt any policy changes.

Again, I'm not trying to second-guess your policies--just relating my own experience. You do a great job with this forum.

Well, like Mgbrand pointed out, by blocking gmail, we are alienating certain people. I never liked that part of it.

Not a website but the Facebook luv page was getting spam at least 15X a day. I became admin and now it takes me at least 3 minuets per new request to look at their page before approving them. It's a pain but since this started we have had spam less then 5 X. I say if blocking gmail helps conserve time then do it.

This wasn't a fair test. The registration was broken until now. :)

I abandoned CAPTCHA long ago. In my experience, every spambot can defeat it--the only registrants that have trouble with it are old people like me!

Now I see what that is. It's not forum spam, it's email spam, right?

Yes Jack.

Although I haven't noticed any problems with gmail on the forums lately.
