I want to open a wall up between rooms, but its a load bareing wall. Its an 11 1/2 foot long wall. Could I run a beam across the top with a joist in the middle, and on the ends of course, to support it? My brother in law said it could be done but he wouldnt do it if it were his house (?). I dont see the issue if the beam and joists would be enough support, but Im no carpenter.

What do you meen open up?? Like put a door in?? If its a load berring wall then thats were it gets tricky. A nice big header would need to be put in over what ever opening you wanted to put in of course, but it depends on how big of an opening you are talking about!!

the only thing you can do with that is a header, and a set of posts.

the max span for a 4x8 is 12 ft, it MUST be supported by a set of posts, preferrably 4x6's.

spanning between joists(heading) is only appropriate for non-load bearing walls

Ive got a contractor thats a customer at work helpin out. He hooked me up with this beam that looks like 2 2x6s sandwiched verticly between 2 horizontal 2x6s laminated together. It wont take any support in the middle just the ends. The wall Im taking out is 11 1/2 feet and has a door opening in it now. I want the whole wall out. Now I can get dirty. Thanks fellers.

Its done! Well, sort of. The posts and beams are done. I had to have a support post in the middle which is alright. It opened things up real nice though.

I did some joint compounding today on the ceiling. Wow! Its a good thing I layed down some plastic before I started. I didnt like the feel of the wide putty knife so I went to the garage and grabbed one of my old trusty body filler spreaders. That worked out well.
