my metal shop class went to a skills compition at LBCC (linn benton community college). the skill areas included - milling, lathe, arc, gas, mig, tig, automotive, all around, and arcitecture. we only entered people in the mill, lathe, arc, gas, mig, tig, and all around. our all around guy had to build something, he got second. the guys on the mill and the lathe won their comps. all of the guys in mig and tig lost, and somebody got 4th in gas. but most importantly, arc welding, a buddy of mine got 4th, adn i got 2nd, out of like, 45 kids in 15 schools. i won a grinder, and arc welding helmet, and a pair of gloves. not to bad for a junior.

Congrats! Wish we had that when I was in school. Always had my welds hangin on the shop wall. Milling, lathe, architecture... that's an entirely different story :D

Think I ran my first bead @ 8-9 years old. Dad worked for Medford Steel for @ 30 years, my brother and I both worked there too.

Don't know what you plan on doing with your life, but you can be successful working with your hands, doing something well and with pride

thanks man. i was looking into a being a welder, or maybe going into tool and dye making. i talked to a guy who owns a local machine shop, and he said that the next guy who he hires is going to have to want to buy it in the next ten years. that would be cool. he has a hone that is automatic. a bore that measures of of the crank or the deck, a rod hone, a head machine, and all kinds of electronics to see if alternators and starters and such are working.

There you go. Tell that dude, you're the guy he needs to be looking at. Then be prepared to tell him why and back it up.

dude thats freakin awsome. I did an automotive compition like that and won a scollarship to UTI from Ford. I couldnt go becouse i had to pay money up front and upon graduating Ford would pay off any loans i had. Whith a compition win like that on record you should have a good name if you go into welding! :D

thanks guys. i work real hard at what i do mechanicly adn welding wise. i dont like other school work that much, but i am the only junior in the advanced auto at my school. there are some other juniors in the advanced metal shop with me, and some of them are real good welders to, they just couldnt pull it all together the day of the compition. i did real bad the day of the compition, on my vertical up, 6011, i kept stickin, so i had to crank it to like 110. and my overhead 7018 was pretty bad to, but it would have been really strong though. i guess part of it is performing unde pressure, and that is something that i usually dont struggle to much with.
