premise sounds like it would make for some fun
$500 budget for a car
exuding brakes wheels and tires, tires restricted to 190+ treadwear
and obviously safety gear, race seats, cage, helmets, suits, extinguisher, etc

Sounds like a ton of fun if you can find a running car for 2-300 and throw a couple hundred of junkyard engineering into it.

Gives people on a budget a way to get on a track at least.

I was looking into a crx my brother has taking up space for $250

250 for a car
250 for parts, new gaskets, junkyard hunt for a bigger radiator and an oil cooler. Etc
600ish for tires
+brakes, wheels
race seats are spendy, harnesses etc.
300ish for steel to fab a cage
I think entry is 150 per driver and 300 for the car or something so 750 for 3 drivers..
Comes to something like 3 grand. Plus whatever comes up

Getting crafty selling stripped out interior pieces could pay part of the cost to get the car back.

I would do the crx. I love my Luv but the crx would blow it away on a race track easily.

1977, Currently in the process of SBC 350/TH350 Swap.

I was watching a YouTube video of a luv with a 4.3 doing decently in a straight line but I agree the corners looked really hairy in it, lots of sawing the wheel, a crx would be a lot more smooth. I think the only huge advantage a crx has is that there are probably 1,200 Honda parts from turbo setups and nitrous kits to brakes and body panels on craigslist and maybe 15 luv parts none of which help go faster.
Trying to decide if I want to spend the money on it or not. Maybe I can lazily do it and be ready by 2017
that said I did see a rough luv for $200 about 2 hrs away... and a 307 sbc for 250 with edelbrock intake and carb..

That wood grain luv looks awesomely bad probably a ton of fun to race

I thought about entering with my 1983 Datsun 200SX, which was GIVEN to me by someone from my church. It's been off the road since 1997, but we briefly had it running, and the engine, trans, and rear end all appear to be in good shape. I just haven't gotten off my lazy butt and gone through it, and don't have the funds to get all the safety equipment plus the entry fees. As it stands, the car is still sitting around, but I'm not getting rid of it just yet. It has plenty of potential, especially with a clever engine swap and a change to a manual trans.

The site says Lexus SC cars the sc300 and sc400 win most, and the other rwd Lexus I think the gs400?
But those cars are not that cheap in not sure how horrible of shape it would have to be in to be 500 bucks. and they are all automatic so that would be a real.shot in the dark on reliability for a race

Actually, although very rare, there were a few early SC300s built with a 5-speed manual. Don't know how rare it is, but I have actually worked on one several years back at the shop.

That must be very rare any info I have found says they are all automatic, have seen one someone swapped a supra 5 speed into. The sc300 has the same engine as a supra without the turbo(s) so it would be possible to swap over.
But with a $500 budget it would be pretty much impossible to do anything beyond the allowed safety work.

Middle of moving now and working on my current dirtbike and trying to get a faster one so I am gonna be at least a year from even starting that process. That and there is a 24hr enduro a couple hours away I will probably try first on my bike
