I got a drunk driving charge in Denver in 1989 and it cost me a total of 48 bucks. My father used to drive drunk on a regular basis and the cop would just laugh at him. I saw a commercial today that said a drunk driving conviction could cost you 10,000 dollars?
Umm? whaaat? I don't drink anymore, but that seems a bit extreme.

I bet if you drive drunk and kill someone they make you pay for the funeral. Those are expensive.

I have no sympathy or love for drunk drivers.

It should cost you your drivers license for 5 years on the first offense and permanently on the 2nd.

i did when i was 20 (2011) and was charged with a minor dui at a b/a of .03....
so far its cost 2000+ between the ticket, fines and the 3 classes, dodged another $480 for treatment.
+6 months suspended license
+ reinstatement fee and sr22 on insurnace which raised me about $50 a month for 2 years, so $1200 extra by the end.
if u pay for a lawyer too and it was a second offense i could see 7500-10k.

moral of the story.... call a friend or a taxi

"begin rant" People complain the penalties are stiff for a DUI/DWI but considering the reality of it, it's not near enough IMHO. I used to be do this back when I was in high school until a dear friend and amazing young lady was in her car driving home and was drilled by a drunk driver. She is paralysed from the chest down and disfigured. Was a hell of a wake up call for me. How do you put a restitution amount on this? Perhaps the offender should have to pay the continuing medical costs for the victim? Hers is probably in the millions by now (been 28 years now). I don't see how one can do this nowadays with the amount of other avenues there are for a ride home. I can't see a legitimate justification for this. "end rant"

My wife runs a State Farm office. Here in Ca with the fines, sr22 insurance, school etc it is a bit over 10K if you count the insurance hike. People complain and even yell at her when they get the new price. She just says "you drove drunk, you made your bed now sleep in it". I too have no sympathy for those who feel that are above the law and get caught. In my opinion they are lucky to get caught and put in jail for the night, they could have put some one in the morg. Myself, Rondog and Drummer actually get to play with a different set of rules with a Commercial license, in Ca it's .04 for us.

The cost of a DUI is for a reason, cuz driving drunk is about as dumb as it gets.
