Many of you know I have a flying hobby. I bought my airplane from a gentleman named Nate Waters, a retired navy pilot and WWII vet. He told me a bit of a story about landing a plane on the ice cap of Greenland to save a downed aircrew. He is 92 now and I still take him flying as he can't fly himself anymore. I picked him up yesterday and he showed me his distinguished flying cross he earned in WWII. I started to search this story out as I wanted to know more about him, his kids can care the less about him or his stories. I came across the story below and the second link is a picture of him, he is standing and second from the right with the beard. I am now honored I am a true friend and have the chance to fly him around every week, in my opinion he is a true American hero. The day he has to "Fly West" will be a day that I am sure I will shed tears. Even with my bad back after reading this story I will never complain about lifting him from his wheel chair to my plane, it's the least I can do for him.
On page 14 of the first link is him and the crew taking off from the ice cap.

Wow, that was quite a story. Greenland sure handed us our asses that year.

To anyone that is a little apprehensive about the length of the article, it's worth muscling through it. :)

I have a hard time understanding why he just tells me "I was involved in a rescue on Greenland"and leave it there. At 22 years old he volunteered for the mission knowing many failed before him. I can't believe his kids are not proud of their father for this act. All they say is "no one wants to hear those old stories". I think a long lunch is needed to get more info from him on his WWII flying stories.

I agree . My neighbor and i have a friendship like this . He is an ex drag racer and has all the trophies , news paper clippings class record plaques in his garage . His kids dont understand what it took to acomplish some of these things . My story is nothing like yours , but similar . Waht your doing is noble

How can I say I loved reading this and yet feel so sorry for the lost lives? His spirits must truly be "sky high" when you take him flying.
