Hey guys,

I have a 1986 Yamaha YFM225 Moto4 quad. Its the 2WD one with a centrifical clutch. It has had a horrible oil leak and while out on a longer ride it ran itself dry of oil and it quit running. It still turns over easy (almost too easy, no compression?) so its not siezed or anything, however it wont fire. Right before it died there on the mountain I could hear the valves popping which I know is really bad. While I was trying to limp down the mountain and back to the LUV, it made a terrible clanging sound like it had marbles in it and it lost power all at once and died. I later found broken pieces of metal (piston pieces maybe?) in the crankcase while emptying what was left of the oil.

After all that, do you guys think this bike is salvagable? And if it is, do you think its worth fixing? Of course being so old, I wouldn't want to spend much more than like $300 on it. If I did all the work myself, what would I have to do/replace to make this quad running again? Would it be practical? Do you guys think I could get a whole new engine for $300 or less? Or should I just scrap it?

A little angry with myself,

Brian

Sounds like you may have a broken connecting rod, or serveral other possibilities. It would be hard to know for sure what you will need to replace until you get in there but I would bet on a crank shaft, rods, pistons and you probably have scoured cylinder walls. Until you open it up, it's anyones guess to what ALL you might need.
