This could apply to other things too.

Developing A Test
Brainstorming for this months' Cleaning Clinic generated some interesting thoughts, opinions and speculation from some of our techs and other crew here at Brownells. Summed up, there appears to be an enigma surrounding the performance of different types of rust preventives. What works well for some shooters, could very well fall short for others. So, I felt the best way to assist you with product selection was to try and show the limitations of some of the more common products by subjecting them to a simple 72-hour, environmental test.

thats very intresting......i know gun nuts that cringe at the thought of using WD-40. but it looks like it was one of the best. the COSMOLINE didnt suprise me at all. my buddie got an old mosen nagant one time that had been stored in that stuff for the last 30 years. it took both of us cleaning for like 3 hours to get it all off. the Hoppes #9 DID suprise me. i have always thought Hoppes was pretty decent stuff.

I always used Hoppes #9 on my guns when I was younger. That was about all there was.. I started using Break Free when I went to using semi auto pistols. My brother and his friends used WD40 when it rained at a event where they shot cowboy. SAS stuff. Their guns were not all rusty at the end of the day like a lot of other people.
They did clean and "oil" their guns at the end of the day.

Most of peoples good stuff should be stored in something that is heated. Like a old refrigerator with a light bulb that is all ways on to store your welding rods. Regular cleaning and oiling is one of the best things you can do.

I've heard the WD in WD40 stands for "water displacement." It's not really a lubricant, and is somewhat volatile, but I think spraying it down to keep it from rusting is a good use for the stuff. Back in college we had a lathe that was outside and I kept it sprayed down with WD-40 and that kept it in good condition, and I've always used WD40 and light steel wool to remove surface rust. For guns I tend to just use plenty of Breakfree CLP and I've not had problems.

You are correct about WD40 number 40. I guess it was the 40th formula. I have used it in older aircooled VW beetles that were prone to getting wet distributors in heavy rain.... A spray of WD40 inside and it would fire up...

We all have used it for a lube, or rust penetration and it works to some degree.

Their is some kind of spray on cosomline like stuff. When I did machine shop work, we would spray our reground crankshaft's before we bagged them. We never had a rust problem. I do not remember its name. I think we bought it where we bought our pistons, valves and things.

PapaG did any of your VW's ever catch on fire? I use WD-40 to burn spiders, and I know that points do arc occaisionally...

I've been using Micro Mist for the past few years and it seems to work pretty good. My safe is in the garage and is subject to temp changes so my guns will rust quickly when conditions get right. As long as I apply the Micro Mist once a year and after any use it manages to prevent rusting. Good research papa :smt023
