<rant>

Disclaimer: I'm running on 4 hours of sleep, and i'm about to go back to work for another 7 hours. bear with me

I read a philosophical discussion once about the Marxist view of "Value"

In this discussion, the idea of Value being relative or absolutein relation to an individual was brought up. It took me a moment to register this, since it seemed like a topic a bit too advanced for me, but I understood what the author meant.

The value of something is NEVER absolute. You may be willing to pay 50,000 for a 1956 rustedoutshitboxonwheels, while i may only be willing to pay 300. In this case, the Value is more important to YOU than to me right? Another aspect of the value something ACTUALLY HAS is based on COST.

Because you just spent 50 grand on a car, your perceived VALUE of said vehicle is very high.
I however, only spent 300, so my perceived value is very low.

Let's not forget this.

I tire of looking through advertisements for different things on CL or here or anywhere that has something advertised for a specified sum that the owner THINKS said item is worth.

IE: I read an ad today for an older tricycle(a child's trike at that) being sold for 150 bucks.
The owner felt the trike was "Vintage" and therefore the price was fair. I did not agree.

First of all, It's use to ME is worthless. I wanted to buy it for my niece. Its use to her is VALUABLE. however its COST to me is set way to high for her to enjoy it and appreciate it properly. In my opinion, the seller is basing his/her opinion that said tricycle is valuable because it's "Vintage". I say it's overpriced for a simple children's toy.

Keep things like this in mind when selling something.

otherwise, i will start selling "Vintage/Antique" boogers for 60 bucks each.

In a free market economy such as the USA I don't know if I'd give much credence to Marx regarding value or cost...Bottom line for me is, I decide before hand what I want to pay for something. That's what it's worth to me (aha, a third word, 'worth'). I tell people on here before you even start shopping decide what you WANT to pay, and stick to that. Then it's automatically the right price. If you want to pay too much for it, well then at least you still don't mind doing it. But yeah I hear you people so hard up for money they try to sell their old tricycle as vintage. That's ridiculous. I freakin hate Craigslist lately, I try to do a search for cars & trucks for sale by owner, less than $1000 and I get all the clowns who put the price as like $1 or $99 but really it's a dealer car for $15,000. You know who are really bad? Jeep Wrangler owners. You'd think perfume comes out the exhaust of them things judging by the asking prices people want for them. I just think over 10 g's for a 15 year old automatic 4 banger is too much, even if it's a Jeep.

Anything is only worth what some one is wil ing to pay, and the holder of said item is willing to accept. Free market economy at it's finest...

yup. i totally agree with you eln.

i just feel it's frustrating and sad to see people resort to doing stupid and desperate things like this.

My dad taught me growing up that when i sell something, be FAIR and tell both the good AND bad and let the people decide. (he hates pushy sales people. As do I)

When i listed my truck up for sale, i listed the asking price for 1k. i figured that was a good price since i know the engine and drivetrain is reliable, its relatively fuel efficient (for a 30 year old truck), and even though it has some body damage, its not detrimental to the operation of the truck.

i got an offer to pay someone 50 bucks to tow it to the junkyard a day later...

I swear, sometimes i think the world is full of douchebags.
