TRENTON-- Driving down the road to get that last accumulation
of snow off your car could cost you money next year.
Gov. Jon Corzine signed a law this week putting into place fines
of $25 to $75 for drivers with "dangerous accumulations" of snow
or ice on their cars or trucks.
The new bill requires motorist to remove the snow and ice from
their entire vehicle, including roof, hood, trunk, and windshield.
Enforcement isn't to begin for a year.
The law is believed to be the first of its kind in the nation.

Honestly, this makes sense. I don't know how many times I've had to dodge snow that's been flying off of other people's vehicles... actually had a piece crack my windshield once. But, it does suck for people that're in a hurry.

That does make sense. I wish Iowa would pass a law like that!!

when i lived in alaska, i always cleaned off my vehicle completely when i left.
not because i didnt want the snow to blow onto someone else's car, although that is aggrivating, but i always thought that if i were to loose control and go into a ditch then at least other people could see my truck(deep ditches in ak) instead of just a lump of snow that could have been put there by a plow

What about people who are unable to do this? Old people, disabled people, people have no way to do this? That should have been put in the bill. My wife has disable license plates, she could not get to the roof of her car or down for ice on the bottom..

Sounds like a good deal, but... most of these bills do not seek input on them. IT could be against the ADA laws with out some provisions.

I understand where you're coming from, but it's still dangerous to leave snow piled up on your vehicle. The ice that cracked my windshield came off the top of a car sporting disabled plates.

So how do they do it. If it is a violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act, the whole thing could and most likely will be overturned or thrown out. My wife worked at a college disability services office. while she was ok, it is a BIG NO NO, to not take the ADA in considering trying to do anything... As the Academic Server Administrator I had to supply special software, and computer equipment for those who needed it.... The couple of old buildings that did not have a elevator in them, the class had to move if someone need to ride the elevator.

I think it is a good Idea, I just don't think it was well though out. First ticket to someone with a disability, the news, and a disability group will be all over it.

If I get hit by a rock falling off a gravel truck and it breaks my windshield, it is tough luck here. My time in snow land is limited, so you guys know what's best in those areas....

Hmm... Here, if stuff is flying out of your truck, you get nailed with littering (except stuff from live animals and clear water... lol, don't pee alongside the road! The same law that prohibits the dumping of used motor oil covers "unreated human waste" :? ), so if a rock flies off a truck and breaks somebody's windshield, the receiving somebody usually reports an 'untarped' load. But, if it came from the roadbed, then nobody is at fault.

If you have more than one seizure in the space of 5 years (correct me if I'm wrong), they'll suspend your DL. Having seizures is a disability, right? And, if you can't meet the safety standards (aka blindness) you're denied a license. Driving is definitely a privilege. If a disabled person can't remove the snow from his/her vehicle, there's always Public Transportation.
A few years back, I had a neighbor that was disabled, and she wasn't able to drive, so I picked up whatever she needed while I was out and about.
Hmm... there ought to be a provision that allows disabled persons to drive their vehicle to a carwash or something to have the snow removed.

I'm not trying to anger anyone, just discussing a new law. Thanks for bringing up the ADA side of things PapaG.

Not seizure, you can get that for diabetics for having low blood sugar too. No I am talking for wheel chair, bad hips, knees and such things... The wife has knees, no cartilage left... bad hips too. All will have to be replaced at some time. With a fire alarm at work she was able to go down stairs.. But the elevators would not work, she has to down stairs.... It is better since she moved to the 2nd floor from the 7th as far as going down, but forget walking up stairs. No getting down to knock of ice, she could do it with a stick or something, but she has a Chevy Equinox... Small SUV for the seat height, no way to get the snow off the top. We have a Saturn Vue, which our son is using, so same thing. Forget my trucks, for her both are 3/4 ton. No low cars any more... She sat in out nephew's TransAM, I had to help her get out... She could clean the snow off that one.

I don't follow non closed in animal trailers. Been there...
