I am looking for a good, off roading GPS unit to use when out on my quad. I was recommended a Garmin. I'm looking for some input/ experiance from ones who have them. What's a good value? On road would also be helpful, but off road is the main need.

My mom has a Tom Tom, my dad has a Garmin. They like them both. My dad hunts and is in the middle of nowhere alot, and it seems to keep him from getting lost.

Mom uses her's mostly on the paved roads, and she never goes outside a 20 mile radius from where she lives. She hasn't gotten lost since she started using it, but she never got lost before.

I can tell you that the GPS that is built into the blackberry is pure shit. I have used a Garmin before and liked it.

I can't vouch for off-road but I ended up getting the Garmin for street driving.

The Tom Tom has some nice features though. I think on the Tom Tom you can avoid certain streets, where as on the Garmin, you pretty much have to go the way it tells you. So, some may like the Tom Tom better. Those people that like to avoid a certain street (probably due to traffic) would probably like the Tom Tom.

The Garmin has a "detour" button but it seems to pick the second best way, which may or may not avoid the street that your trying to avoid. Of course you can always veer off course and it will do it's best to recalculate and get you there anyway.

The main reason I got the Garmin is because you can scan your surroundings for a particular restaurant or store. I like the menu it gives you with each location, distance, and an arrow so you can pick which one you want. It's great for finding a Home Depot if your in unfamiliar territory, for example.

My Garmin has three modes, car, bicyle, or pedestrian. I don't know if they have another model for off-road.

I brought up this subject at a lunch a couple days ago and a buddy of mine was talking about getting one for off-road also. I mentioned that I had a Garmin and he went off (seemingly forever) about what a piece of shit the Garmin is and how there was some special off-roading GPS that he was buying that was a "real" GPS. Of course, by then he pissed me off so I didn't pay attention to what the brand name was.

Mine isn't perfect, but it will get you close, usually within sight of where your trying to go. My wife seems to dwell on the fact that it makes mistakes sometimes, particularly at the end of a trip. But, like I said, usually by then you can visually identify the location, so you can shut it off and finish on your own.

Personally, I think it's worth every penny. My only regret is that I didn't buy one sooner.

I have a Garmin and it works great and it has it's little quirks but you get used to it and then every thing is right. The quirk is you can drive past an intersection before it lets you know to turn but i just pay attention to the distance and no problem.
The Garmin is upgradable and mine can be switched as most to truck specific routs as well. And when come to getting around in busy city traffic the GPS earn it's keep.

I like my wife's Garmin, But it can be off. The road to my daughters is a small rural area and the map road and the real road are off from each other. This one can take you a long way around when traveling. I may not know how to use it quite right.

My brother has a TomTom and we have used them both in the car at the same time. Both have a few things I like.

I have heard people complain about the Current GPS units because they have changed something from the way older ones worked. I think it has to do with the way the USGA maps are done. A number of those have gone back to the old style GPS units when doing serious off roading, back in the boon docks.

A friend of mine was into Geocaching and used the old style GPS.

Grandmaster of the "Shade Tree" way.. I can't see the yard for all the cars. Come on down and we will sit on the porch and watch the grass grow.

I have a Magellan and a Tom Tom.

Personally, I really like the Tom Tom because you can go online and seriously customize it, edit it's maps, and download info that others in your area have uploaded about map changes and construction delays in your area, new roads, traffic delays, new POI's, etc.

My wife really loves her Magellan because it's simple to use, has a big screen, and doesn't have so many "bells and whistles" that she gets confused.

I can't imagine not having one...they really come in handy.

Here is some info that my dad sent to me if that helps.

A good souce of GPS info is at http://Poi-Factory.com Not only do they have a lot of good information on GPS (mostly Garmin), you can also download an almost unlimited number of POI (Points of Interest) files for free. You can get their red-light and speed enforcement camera files for a small fee, or free after being active on the website.
