Every time i try to do anything to my LUV, my Dad has to stick his fingers into the project. And something always gets screwed up. Today i waited till he got busy with something and i jumped at the chance to take out the rear axle to get some work done to it. In my case, i needed to strip down the differential as i went along and i got the wheels, drums, axles removed and i had gotten the 3rd member loose as to let it drain. I then got working on removing the lower shock bolts and shackle pads. Enter DAD... He gets the bright idea of wedging the axle pad to help drain the gear lube. I told him that it had drained enough and besides, the 3rd member was loose. As usual, he disregarded my opinion and wedged the axle. Less than half a pint of lube drained. A then went to get some coat hangars to support the backing plates. I then heard the sound of metal abruptly shifting around and the 3rd member landed on the edge of the drain pan. The pan tipped up and gearlube poured from the pan. Now he's faded away from the project and im the one spending alot of time with kitty litter.
Normally, doing work like this is kinda fun, but just seems to be able to zap the fun right out of it.

Tell dad to step off, and if you wanted his help, you'd ask for it.

Tried that once.... didn't turn out so well, pretty much a shouting match started after that, there's been some issues of him telling me how to drive... EVERY TIME I drive him somewhere, he makes some comment or makes and issue with this n' that, I was 4 seconds behind a car and he said i was tailgating, 1second or less is tailgating or just plain stupid, then he's all about not blowing stop signs in my neighborhood... says I'll start running them everywhere else, no I don't, only in the neighborhood when i'm SURE that no car is comming.

For that one, I always tell people. "If you don't like the way I drive, get the hell out of my damned car!" I don't put up with people that like to 'back-seat drive'. It pisses me off to no end.

Dad is an opinionated, crusty ,old bulldog. You cant tell him anything. Back when i was in high school, my friends were scared as hell of him. Even today, some of my bros wont get near Dad. There once was a guy named John Wayne, the actor who portrayed as a Army grunt, a Marine jarhead. a Navy sailor, a Cowboy. Dad is a real life John Wayne who doesn't act. Calling him on this will only cause problems.
I cant work and watch him at the same time. And i keep trying to just that. This isn't fun anymore. I guess i'll make a few phone calls and find a job out of state. This way i can work on the truck my way.

When i was younger i never worked on my LUV at home. Always went to a buddy's place. Otherwise I'd hear all about Dad had this bad azz Olds Gutless 331 with 4spd and how he wrenched on it and somehow got it to beat his bro's 64 GTO 389 4spd. the stuff i do to my motors now would make his head spin off if he saw it anyway.

I've been working aircraft for the last 20 years. There's a certian degree of precision that's demanded. I want to carry that on to my personal vehicles but Dad injects his "Jethro Bodine" ethic on to every aspect of the build. Bailing wire and duct tape is great to get you home, but i dont want to call it a soild repair.

You know, Blue, I'm glad you have a place like this to vent. I kind of had the same problem growing up trying to work on cars around my dad... what little bit he did help, he would screw up... after a while, he gave up though.

I did a quick search on the word "dad" with you being the author. You've been a little vocal about this subject.

I love reading this stuff. This place is so much more than just a luv site. We all have something in common. The ones of us that have been here since the beginning like us all know these little things about each other.

Can you believe this site has been up now for almost 4 years? We should have an anniversary party.

Man i tell everyone about the stud for the thermostat housing! I'll think back on that and still get pissed. And i dont even own that motor anymore!!!!
It's like going to work somewhere and you get assigned with the bosses son. He can screw things up and there aint a damn thing you can do about it. You're the one left to pick up the pieces.

And another thing, If Dad has a question, you have to stop and answer to his satisfaction before you can proceed with what you were doing. For instance, i had both axles pulled and standing on end in the shed. Dad had to inspect them and he made the comment that they weren't the same length. I stated that they weren't supposed to be the same length. Well that started the whole shit of me explaining exactly why there were as they were. He wouldn't let up untill he could see why it was that way.

DAMMIT!!! IM READY TO LOSE MY MIND!!!!!!!

**Update** This weekend was Dads birthday. My sister gave him a Karcher pressure washer. It's one of those little yellow pieces of crap that are sold thru Home Depot. This morning Dad wanted to tackle the black streaks that run down the side of my cargo trailer. From previous experience, i knew that it took rubbing compound to get rid of them but Dad wanted to use this new toy. Well, he ended up ruining a 6" X 3" patch of paint on the side of the trailer. And he's got the stones to say that the paint was shitty to start with. The trailer is less that a year old...

Funny you mention the boss' son as a comparison.

I've seen companies throw BIG money after problems caused by the boss' son. And your right, nothing was done to him at all. It's frustrating to watch, especially when it starts to threaten your livelihood.

I guess I'm sorta lucky because my dad is pretty good about this kind of stuff.

Although sometimes he acts like yours.

Like the time his GF dented the side of my 96 Z28, so he took a hammer and chisel to the dent from inside the trunk to "fix" it.

I came out and saw the dent as was like "WTF!".

Then I came out later and saw what he did to it and was like "WTF!".

LOL

Then he said he'd pay to fix it. So I got an estimate which came to like $1200. He said, "whoa, that's ridiculous, how about $500". I just told him "nevermind".

Well my dad can be that way also but if it wasn't for him, I wouldn't even be on this site, he is the one that helped me get my LUV. And he taught me a ton about vehicles, last time he was here helping me with the house, I fractured my hand punching the roll off dumpster in fustration, but when he passes on, I am going to be so lost!!! So as hard as it can be, try to appreciate everything he has done for you, probably a lot more than just the bad stuff. My dad is the one that ripped the door off my LUV but he was so guenuinely upset and sorry about it, I couldn't get mad at him (plus the door needed replaced anyway from when I tried to rip it off the same way  ), I still try to joke with him about it and it upsets him still. Just remember, you will more than likely be the same way with your kids!!

Tilted, Your Dad seems to be cut from a different mold. You stated that he felt genuinely upset about the door. My Dad would have said something like "This cheap ass, Japanese door crumbled like tinfoil, you should have bought a better truck". And then he would have walked away thinking that his 2 cents worth of advice would have been more than i deserved.
When the day come and he's no longer among us, it will be devistating. But one has nothing to do with the other in my book. I dont know if he's just out to get even for all the crap he had to put up with me growing up.
I wanted to take auto mech in high school. He flat said "NO". School was for an education, not playing with cars. It really didn't matter education wise, i needed 73 credits to graduated and i got 73 credits. Anything more was just sucking up to the establishment. When it came to mechanical stuff, Dad was not a good teacher. He didn't teach at all. Everything i've learned about mechanical stuff came from everyone and everything else but Dad.
I told him he needs to get a job but he could care less. It's much more fun to get in my hair. Once the axle is installed, that's it for working on the truck. If i have to, i will take the truck around the block and fix it on the street. I've had to fix stuff Dad did that way so i might as well cut my losses and fix it right the first time around the block instead of undoing his work and then doing it correctly.

Kind of off the subject.... but the owner of the company I work for is about 85% owner of the bank in the town his company is located in. It's a small town, and his family is large. One of his relatives got involved in a serious wreck, alot of people got hurt, and some heavy drugs were involved. Bail was 10 grand, so bond would have been like a thousand bucks, but the bondsman wanted to wait until morning. The bossman said "My kinfolks don't spend the night in jail." ... went to the bank at 1am, used his key, opened the safe, got 10 grand out, and got posted bail.

It's good to be rich.

The Howard Hughes that bought a hotel, so he could have a place to sleep one night? I don't think he'd beg too much.... but then again he had a screw or two loose...

Hughes was a paranoid germaphobic. He lived in recluse by his own will. He trusted nobody. He firmly believed that his lifelong friends had betrayed him. His bodyguards were mormons because of their honesty and values. Brilliant, yet sick in the head.
