So, i've gotten together with this farmer's daughter that goes to my school, i've known her for a while and we finnally went out and we've been going at it for only three weeks...

So i'm at her dad's farm and in their front yard there's some tractors that've been sitting for years, so, she told me one was hers and pointed it out "that's my oliver" she also (i think) has a m and a k john deere's as well..... so the oliver's a diesel with no noticable leaks or anything... so, were should i start with trying to get it to run, i'm going to bring some batteries and a mix of diesel, ATF, and kerosene with me (whenever i try to start it up) and run the inlet hose from the pump in the concoction of fluids stated above. Hopfully the injectors aren't gelled up. I want to eventually get it to move... even if it takes me getting a hitch put on the LTD and towing it out (so i can at least work on it.) Anything I should precheck to make sure that it'd be safe to start it?

BTW, she has a turbo setup for it, the current one is NA, would I have to swap out the injection sys.?

Try turnin her over by hand to make sure she is not seized.
Make sure the air intake is clean, give her juice and fuel and see what she does!

Also make sure you have a way to turn her off, be it the switch is in good working order or what ever. To play it safe, fire it up with the air filter off and have a small steel plate or piece of plywood that will seal tightly over the intake so you can kill it by starving it for air, just in case.

Hard to explain, but picture placing a flat piece of something over your LUV's carb. and choke out the eng. See how you could just put something flat of it to choke it out? Well a diesel can "run away" if it was to get fuel ,unregulated, from another source, like the engine oil. The only way to kill it would be to choke it out ( or jam it into gear if that will work) so just make sure you have the air intake set up in a way to choke it out, just in case.

I probably over explained this, but oh well, good luck, I hope it fires up easy for you. 8)

All I have to say is does she have a sister? Maybe a cousin in Oregon? A chick with an Oliver tractor is a rare one indeed.

What model of tractor is it? Those older Oliver 6 cyl diesels (77s, 88s, etc) are pretty tolerant. They will run on anything, including their own crankcase oil. It is a good idea to make sure you have a way to kill it before firing it up the first time.

It's a 1920 somethin, and yes it's a six, i'm hoping it's not full of water. I'll give the girl the juice if ya'll just wanna work on the tractor yourselves.

Took another look at the tractor today, looked at the intake setup and it's made so it won't fill with water. Took a look at the injector pump, looks BRAND NEW, looked at hoses n' all that and the rad., they're in good condition. So i thought i'd take a look at the oil... and... well..... now i now y they parked it... head gasket.... eww....

So that's not going to happen... unless I had a shop to stuff it in.

When her parents move out eastward in NC, she'll be staying there... so I'll help her with fixing up the place she's in. That'll be fun, specially cause... well, her parents will be out east.....

Well, took a walk with her dad yest., found out that it's just what rotella T oil does with water... it's no head gasket, he pointed out that the injector return lines are leaking, he want's to at least replace them, if not route them in a different way. The alt. is unplugged from the what little bit of wiring harness it has, he has a one wire alt. that he'd want me to install once it's runnable.

It's not seized either, i tried turning it by had, made the crank pulley move maybe a 1/8", so he grabbed it and turned it maybe a quarter turn...

Learned to shift it too, BTW it's an 1947 oliver 88D, it's got a six speed in it, two reverses and six forward gears, high n' low ranges.... not synched (duh).... fun fun fun

we also pumped up the tires and cleaned out his old 51' ford with a flat-6, he said it's my job to get it to run.... oh goody... but there's nothing wrong with it, he just parked it cuase it's only got one taillight, no signals n' stuff, just a bit dangerous on the road.... and it turns freely, we just need a 6v batt. and some gas... and bleed the brakes on it, which are conveniently only drum brakes all around.... yippee...

more to come...
