I wrote an app that tracks the production/waste/downtime/component genealogy for the production lines in the department I'm in at work. Now about 3 years later, the IT dept was going to create a replacement, but their mgr decided to axe the project. My supervisor decided to volunteer me to do it. Soooo, now I'm getting paid to learn a new language (C#.net), and make an app that they can support. So the software engineer that I'm working with decided that I needed a developer's workstation. So, a new pc is on the way, and I get all the time I need to learn the language and write the app.
yea me! well I'm happy about it anyway, keeps me even farther from the prodution lines! :smt026

You have to pick something that the IT people know nothing about!
I have applied for open positions in IT a couple of times but they keep telling me I need a degree. So I keep bugging them anyway.

yeah.. but our navy IT folks are useless now since we privitized our computer networks to EDS and the IT folks in the squardons are basically there to place trouble calls... so getting in on that would do no good.. dang it...

This whole thread is WAY over my truck driving head. You are talking about other languages and I don't understand some of the english you guys are speaking.

Any way good luck. Sounds like the boss likes you. That's a good thing. 8)

I did a little SQL a few years back, left me with a case of the DBs. :P

One thing I learned about IT and computers in general, being willing to try to do something is 99% of what it takes to do it. Nothing is all that hard if you are willing to jump in. The software engineer at my last job was fond of saying "nope, don't know how to do that, but I'll just get a book and learn." Keep volunteering for stuff and you'll find yourself running the IT department before too long.

Thanks guys. I just found out a little more about my workstation. 3.2 Ghz P4, 800Mhz FSB, 1Gig Ram, 80 gig HD... Sounds like a pretty good machine. Its a Dell GX280. Just wish I could bring it home! 8)

BTW I'm trying to get my s**t together for SQL too, this will be my first database outside access :?
