Today on the local news they were talking about hiring a new police cheif in Rockford and the local hispanic reps want a spanish speaking cheif. There are alot of hispanics in the comunity that cant speak english. Now heres my beef. My great grand father came here from Germany and HAD to learn english. My best freinds mom came here from Italy and HAD to learn english. What makes it so different that we have to somewhat cater to one nationality? What makes it different for them than it did for Italians or Germans?

<begins to rant> I hear ya man.. here in Cali things are so outta control about stuff like that. You don;t have to speak english to pass english in school??? (WTF?) You can vote in like 27 languages and take the drivers license test in about the same number of languages... I don't get it at all. If I went to Mexico or India or Germany, I'd have to learn the language to be in regular society....<ends rant>

i agree totally. The quote above is part of the problem. (not you individually) Their nationality should be American. Unfortunately for a lot of immigrants it isn't.
I think we also need to declare English as the official language for the U.S.
I have had several friends that came over from the former soviet union, who think this is a bunch of crap too. They were required to learn English and pass tests in english before they could become a citizen. Everyone else should too, imo.

I'm right with you all. Anymore you almost need to be bilingual to get any job too. It sets English only speakers up for falling behind in the job market because bilingual Spanish speakers have the advantage. So you could say not only is it preferential treatment for them, but it is detrimental to English only natives. I don't want to discriminate against anyone, but I don't want to avoid it at the expense of being discriminated against either. Sucks both ways. These folks need help, but do we shoot ourselves in the foot to do it?
