I am looking at buying this truck to pull my enclosed trailer. It is a 1979 International with a DT-466 with only 110,000 miles, 5 speed trans with 2 speed rearend, has a 20' foot box with a queen size bed, house size shower and a toliet, has a smaller window a/c mounted in the back wall. The guy says the truck runs good and gets 9-13 mpg but governs out at 68 mph. There is no cab air and the cab has a small rust hole in the driver's side cab corner. But the truck comes with a rustfree cab that has cab air from a 1995 IH. The truck has a toterhome since 1985. I think the front clip is from a newer truck?? It is suppose to have newer tires and brakes. The guy is also a drag racing (races in the Stock Elim. class) and pulled a 34' enclosed trailer so it should pull my 24' with no problem. I am planning to go look at it next saturday and would like any input on what I should look for or any questions I should ask. I have worked on that engine since they are in the older IH tractors and combines, and seem like a good reliable engine. Thanks guys.

Sounds like the gearing(5 and a 2) will cover for small power nicely. Looks good. Go see it in person. The only problem I have had with those IH trucks of all years, is the steering wheel is too big and I hit my knuckles on the windshield when turning.

Yea definatly looks good if the price is right. Not a big engine but pulling a 24' single enclosed trailor should be No problem and expect 10-11 MPG. It comes with a big truck. Does it have a generator?

Thanks for the helpful info. I will have to check the steering wheel to windshield clearance. The guy told me that if you drive 65 mph he got 11 mpg, which is better than my dually getting 5-6 mpg!!!! Does not come with a generator but I have an rv generator that I bought used last summer that I would put in the truck, has a compartment for one. He is asking 17,750 but on the phone said his bottom dollar is 15,500. I am thinking and hoping to offer him 13,000!!!!!

The DT466 is a very good and reliable motor and would last you a long time the truck looks worth all the money he wants so be prepared to pay his 15500 but lay 13000 cash in front of him and you may make out like a bandit.

HINT if you get the truck take it to a IH dealer and have a full overhead and service done on the motor then enjoy years of good service from it.

Good luck on a good buy.

The DT-466 is a great engine, very over built. You should see the size of the mains on that engine. As far as International, they made their rep in medium size trucks with that engine being the backbone. I have switched cabs in that style truck before, it does take some work. Is that cab a S-1900 or a 4700(possibly a 4900) model? Is it air brakes? As far as Air conditioning goes I would repair the cab you have on there, add a gen set and install a RV style roof mount A/C system.

Not sure which cab that is for sure. I was going to ask the guy the other day when I talked to him but forgot. I figured it would be easier to repair the cab then to replace it. Truck does not have air brakes, which is good for me otherwise I would have to get a cdl for them. But that isn't too hard to get. That is what I was thinking about doing with the A/C deal. I have a rv roof mount air in the basement that I would put on the truck and I have an Onan RV generator that is in my trailer that I would move into the truck. Thanks again guys for all the info, sure helps alot!!

I talked to the guy today and he said the cab is a S-1850, same as a 4700. I was going to go look at it last saturday but no one would ride along. Then I was going to go today but they had snow over that way plus a guy came to look at my dually and says he wants it. So I hope he does!! Hoping to go next saturday.

I finally went to look at this truck a couple weeks ago. It wasn't as good as I hoped and the wife said NO. So now I am looking at getting an early to mid 90's Class A motorhome. Was hoping to find a diesel pusher that era but now thinking about going with one on a Chevy chassis with a 454. At least I can work on one of those!!
