I know this is an Air Compressor thread but I have used alot of "stuff" from Harbor Freight with no problems. I have a metal band saw, drill press, 12 ton Hydraulic press, alot of the PITTSBURGH brand wrenches and sockets and have never broken one. Good tools especially for the money. Another name brand I have bought a few of lately is G.R.I.P. tools. Made out of Grand Rapids Industrial Products in Michigan. I can only find them at Big R but they have held up well and have a lifetime Guarantee.

Now back to the Air Compressors. The best least expensive one I have seen and fastest recovery was one my brother made out of an OLD Mopar air conditioner compressor. He tack welded the clutch/pully to make it solid, put it on about a 40 or 50 gallon tank, I forget what size motor he put on it but it would literally outpump what a Die Grinder or any other air tool could pull. That was over 25 years ago and as far as I know he's still using it.

Well, now you've breached the topic of making an air compressor...
One can re-cam an old VW Type 1 and use two cylinders for air and two for power.
They are some pretty incredible stuff, and I think they put out a pretty good amount of air. lol, the local VW machinist uses one in his shop.
It's a bit noisy, but that's because he just ran the exhaust into about 5 feet of pipe for a muffler...
