I don't know if this is common knowledge or not, but I'm so jazzed that I remembered this from years ago that I've got to share....
I'm putting my transmission back in, but I needed to replace the pilot bearing. Now, I'm cheap as heck, and I refuse to buy a tool I don't need. I'm looking at the pilot bearing, trying to figure out how to take it out without the special tool. Here is how I did it:
Tools:
Hammer
11mm socket
cheap socket extender that you don't mind whacking on
grease.
Fill behind the bearing with grease. Put the socket on the extender. Fill your socket with grease. Put in the hole and tap with the hammer. Since the grease can't get past the 11mm it pushes out the bearing. Refill with grease as needed.
After 3 shots, out popped a very beat pilot bearing. I always knew that physics course would come in handy.
