This is a question I recieved in an email from somebody that has been browsing the site. Any help is appreciated-------l. i have one more
question...im losing lots of power power before 3200 rpm and a little
power
in the high end. my edelbrock 650cfm is now a 2bbl...stupid
secondaries!!!
would that be the only thing causing the power loss? im thinking
possibly
timing chain, stall converter, distributor on top of the carb problems.
never seen a small block run like this before...

Well thats kinda vague... What is the ignition timing set at, what kind of engine vacuum is it pulling at idle? How do the plugs even look? Compression and leak down test readings? Does it have oil pressure? Start with the basics, people always overlook those! A million things can cause loos of power, I have no idea where to send ya..

Heres what he sent me------the timing is at 8 degrees, it has oil pressure, compression is good,
and
honestly i havent checked the plugs but i will. its a 11.5-12 to 1
compression motor. dont know what it is actually supposed to be timed
at...do you retard or advance the timing with high compession or would
that
even matter?
one last thing....would a s-10 10bolt rear diff work under the luv with
out
tubbing or an offset?

When he revs it does the timing advance? It should go above your initial setting when you rev the motor.

What kind of fuel does he run, just for curiosity?

so now what is "good"?? Over 180? 225? 125?? this will tell what the swept volume is, (general motor health too) as this will kinda guide you wich way to go with timing, but read them plugs.. and if he dont know how to read plugs a good place to start is : http://www.4secondsflat.com/Spark_plug_reading.html to get some idea on fuel and timing.

I like to see about 170 max compression on a pump gas motor, the exhaust valve closing point has a big effect on this. More than that and better fuel will be needed, or more valve timing.

and yes a S10 rear will fit.

Not to thread hijack here, but is that a general statement that would apply to any motor, or more of a SBC only thing? I've got a LUV with what looks like a 1.9L with a 1.8L head, compression is 195 across all four cylinders. I don't have it road worthy, but I've been wonder what kind of octane I'll need to run in it if I ever do, or if I'll have to get into timing voodoo to make it run right at all on pump gas.

Pretty general, but every engine is different, the tell tale way to know is read the plugs and look for detonation. Engine tuning is pretty universal for gasoline motors.
