I am going to get tires on my daily driver: 96 Ford Contour.
Les Schwab gave me a a quote but there is a service called Siping.
What is that? Is that Necessary to have?

They cut diagnal slits in your tread. You cant hardly see them, and it gives you better traction. My buddy had it done on his Dodge 4x4. Says he is real happy with having it done!

i work at les schwab and it is like the others said we cut grooves into the full tread depth of the tireand with the grooves it gives you increased traction in all weather types and it also gives your tires a longer life what tires are you getting? i would recomend the toyo 800 ultras.

How does it give longer life, to me it seems like the tires would break down quicker??? Can someone explain?

I can come up with two reasons. One is heat. Heat buildup breaks down the rubber, and siping increases surface area for heat dissapation. Just like a heatsink cools better the more fins it has to transfer heat to the air. This is the line I've heard before on siping from reading stuff about it.

The other is increased traction reduces slippage, which grinds off tire material. Slippage also increases heat, so another tie to the first reason.

Another way to look at is is that tires basically wear down from friction, rubber sliding/rubbing the road surface. Siping allows the tread blocks to flex/wiggle more instead of sliding into the pits/valleys of the road surface, so they don't wear off as much. Like sandpaper, you can tap a bolt against it and not do too much, but tap and slide a tiny bit and you'll sand material off the bolt.

When I sipe my race car tires ( dirt sprint car ) I get less races out of the tires due to increased wear. It does work better for traction on a dry slick track, but does no good on a wet or "heavy" track.

I would sipe street tires but if you do alot of off roading it could come back to bite you in the but. Reason being is that it makes the tread blocks weaker as you have just broken them up and if you start spinning on a hard surface you will the chunk the tire out quicker. That is the only reason why i dont sipe my tires...

Yeah, that was basically the reasoning I was thinking for the faster wear on luvrv8's circle track tires. More cuts means more sections of tread that can chunk off during wheel spin. I dunno, I'd have to think about that a bit more to make up a really good BS Physics reason for that happening. ;)

On street tires it does help traction in wet or icy conditions, and it does make the tires last a while longer.

ok i asked my boss all of these questions. and he said..... ok the reason that they last lomger is because of the slits allow for colder running temp and they get more traction because of the slits giving more of a bitting force and a the reason that spinning the tires makes the tire go faster is because the sipping is made to give you traction and not to bust the tires loose so the reason that they go faster is becuase they are spinning and loosing traction and making the rubber peal off

Sounds like my BullSchmit Physics wasn't too far off. Thanks for the further info.
