I just had air bags installed on my work truck and when i picked up the truck, the gear selector on the column felt wobbly-loose. Of course the mechanics didn't know how that could have happened so im stuck with fixing it. How do you get that deep in to the column? There's a steering wheel, switch assemblies, a tilt mechanism and then the linkage. The spring at the base of the lever has fallen in to the housing and that makes the truck usless, i cant get it out of park. Any suggestions?

Usually the 4 bolts that hold the tilt mechanism come loose. You need to remove the steering wheel and there is a special that will help you retain a spring while you remove a clip and a lock plate. With that out of the way you remove the bolts 1 at a time, apply lock tight and retorque. If you don't do it soon, the bolts will break. By replacing the air bag, they never came into contact with the bolts, trust me it was not there fault. This happens to Chevy's all the time.

After re-reading my post, i see that i wasn't too clear with what i was talking about. I had air bags installed on the rear end of the truck for towing. I now see that my original post would lead one to think that i was talking about conventional air bags for safety.
I got down to removing the switches and shell from the column. But now things look bleak. Getting to the tilt assy seems impossible. It looks like im going to remove the column completely and see if the selector shell around the column can be slid down enough to do some good.
