Has anyone ever ventured into the "Head Porting" of a Isuzu 1.8 motor and is it possible with out totally destroying the head? I am going to re-build the original motor that came with my 80 4x4 but I would like to do it right. Balance the lower end, and port and polish the head for even more cross flow. How about decking the block to increase compression??
Any information would greatly be appreciated!!

most of the power is found in the bowls... the area right underneath the valve head. forget about "gasket matching" the ports, work the bowls, deshroud the valve, radius the turn. Remember, air doesnt like turns. the more you straighten it out the more power you will get. Once thats done, put a good multi angle valve job on it. It takes practice. I'd recommend finding an old junker used cracked head to practice on first.

Decking the head, the block and running a thinner head gasket, etc will bump up your compression a little but I'm no 1.8 guru. i have no idea what the stock piston to valve clearance is so i have no idea how far you can go before contact.

Hey brother, I contemplated it a while ago, then i realised how much more $$ it would be to build a 4 banger. Anyway my game of attack was to just pay a guy with a flow bench, they run between $40 to $50 an hour, and will really help you if you actually want to make power with your porting efforts. One thing to keep in mind with bowl work, is you want that air flow as straight as possible before it runs into the valve head, so it forms a perfect cone. You can also get fancy and tig weld or epoxy the ports around if your shooting for big flow numbers. You might try reading smokey Yunicks books that cover head porting, im sure there are more "trendy" porters out there, but the basic flow theory is still very accurate stuff. It will help you to focus your efforts to find more power. Good luck! let us know what results you find
