looking to put a manual 4 or 5 speed in my 66 chevy 1/2 ton truck. currently running the original inline 250 and would like to keep it in the truck. what i'm looking for is what vehicle should i look at ripping the tranny out of that would work in the truck. need better gas milage than what i'm getting now with the granny low my pops put in. i know ill need to change the bell housing too, as far as i knew the chevy bell housings would pretty much mate up to anything chevy. any helpful info would be greatly appreciated.

skip right over the 5 speed and get a BW T56 out of a camaro. 1st gear is pretty low... (cant remember the ratio right now) and 6th is .056:1 i believe. they are a lot more durable than the BW T-5's too.

other part i forgot to mention is ill be running the stock rear gearing of 3.73. wether or not that makes a difference. also what years should i be looking at, and aside from running through the gears, how will i be able to tell if it is a bw t56 and will the bell housing its hooked to mate up to the inline?

1993-2002 Camaro Z28 and 1991-1996? Corvette. yes i believe the bellhousing on the early 6cyl chevy is the same as SBC.

It will work perfect with a 3.73 rear end. thats a pretty deep gear so the .56:1 sixth gear makes it a lot more bearable.
