My brothers got a 97 Mitsubushi Eclipse. On the front fender,
theres about a square inch where the paint got chipped off, but theres no dent, just some surface rust. We might end up taking it to a body shop so they can match the paint, but I thought about doing some of the prep work to same some money.

Can I just use some 240 grit sandpaper and sand the bare metal and feather where the paint meets up with the bare metal?
Any thoughts or ideas?
I am guessing it may be about 300 bucks if I just drop it off and say fix it.

You can feather the chip(s) with 240 grit, then spray the whole fender with high build primer. BLOCK wet sand with 400 grit then repeat until it is smoooooth :) . Should only take 2 coats if sanded properly. Good luck

That makes sense, but would the body shop want to paint the entire fender? I would think if the paints not that old, they would just repaint a small area around the portion that has chipped off.

I think that would depend on the shop. I was assuming that you were removing the fender and taking just the fender to the shop.

Since there is not dent, I dont have to remove the fender. I'd just drop the car off there. I think I'm just going to hit the area with some 240
and then let the body shop do the rest.
Thanks for your input though. :D
