Just wondering what kind of prices you guys have seen on these things in your area. My g/f is looking at buying one, but from the ones I have seen the prices for them go from cheap, to fucking expensive. So I was just wondering if you guys could give me some prices you have seen in your area for them.

Also, if you know anything about shopping for them, fill me in on the details! :D Thanks in advance guys!

Late 90's Jetta diesels run from $5,000-$8,000 and that depends on the shape, mileage, and especially what year the car is. If you find a 1998 VW Jetta diesel there is a good chance you can get it for a decent price. But from what I have learned the 2000 and newer models are always pretty expensive. Now if you want to still buy a TDI, then you may want to consider a 1996-1997 VW Passat TDI. Those cars are the cheapest TDIs I have seen around and they can sell for as low as $3,000. Another big factor is the seller of the car, some people want so much money for these cars and others will give you a great deal. If I wanted to go out and buy a TDI I think I would look for the early Passat. They have a good body style and get much better fuel mileage than the 2004 and up Passat TDIs. After modifications I have heard one of these cars squeezing out 59 mpg. That is crazy! But that is just another feature of diesel that is great. Good luck on finding a VW TDI and hope it turns out to be a good deal for the price.

Awesome! :D

I was reading an article about them, and it seems the standard version gets about 60 or so mpg. (Thats a Imperial gallon, not a US gallon) Anyways, thats pretty damn good! The automatic one gets about 5-7 mpg less. I think if the g/f gets on its gonna have to be auto....trust me...I would rather foot the bill for extra fuel, then pay for burnt clutches and new 5spd's....

I think she wants a 2000 or newer model too. But we will check out older models too. Thanks for the info!

Glad I could help you out. The VW TDIs are probably great cars and I would only be able to imagine one because I have never driven one. All I know is that they have a diesel that is advanced and has the latest technology to get the most horsepower and fuel mileage out of that little 4 cylinder. Most everybody knows that they get unreal fuel mileage. You should be able to find an 00 or 01 model for a pretty reasonable price. Hope you enjoy the fuel mileage and find the car that interests you the most.

Well I been some looking around lately and all I can seem to dig up is Jetta's with price tags of $15,000 or more (Canadian Coin). So that works out to somewhere in the $10,000 range American. Those are all asking prices from dealers I have not acutally went in and dealed on any, thats tommorow's project. Anyways, I have done a lot of reading on them, and they seem like they are a well built heavy car. Heavy is good where I come from, as its gonna make miles on gravel roads, so there needs to be some "actual CAR" there to deliver. I will keep you updated on the dealings. :)

Well I have seen and visited some dealers, and a few private guys too. I found a 2001 Jetta, silver one in the $16,000 price range with about 60,000 miles on it. I think thats the one we are gonna buy. Has most options, except leather. Nice car actually. Never seen gravel. Rare to find a car that hasn't been gravel around here..

Good to hear you found the car that interests you. A 2001 model with 60,000 miles isn't bad. That comes to an average of 15,000 miles a year since being brand new. The new VWs are great looking cars and being able to get a diesel is an awesome feeling. The greatest thing is how much fuel you use, because it is hardly any when you get 50+ mpg.
