My Moms 4X4 truck had a catastrophic failure of the rear differential. It wiped out one of the carrier bearings and galled the carrier to the point that a new bearing has major play to it. Locating a new axle assy seems to be the best bet on fixing this. If i can find a 2wd, 10 bolt axle with the same gear ratio, can i swap out the axles to the 6 lug setup? I dont have a ton of options because all of the wrecking yards around here have gone on a "Crush what we got" kick. I cant locate just a carrier. It would have been worth trying to shim it in to place.

You should be able to as long as they are the same size and spline. Thats what I was going to do to mine (from 5 to 6) until I got the new one.

I found a replacement differential at a wrecking yard thats 30 miles away. It cost 650.00!!! I almost crapped myself but Mom said "Get it" so i did. It's installed and working great. I was wondering about the parts in the carrier. Along with the planetary gears there's an "I" shaped piece of metal and some springs with weights. I've never seen anything like this before. It's not any kind of C clip eliminator because i can see them. Anyone know what this gizmo is?
