Ok i need a little help here guys? Im looking into buying a 76 280z that has been sitting for about 3 years. I went to look at it for the first time today and the battery in it was dead so i couldnt start it. (the guy told me that he had drove it 5 months ago just to make sure it still ran) It has the original fuel injected 6 cylinder with a 4 speed and everything visibly looks to be in pretty good shape. The car originally came from texas and some guy owned it that was in the military. He had taken all the smog stuff off of it which i dont even know what it had. There is a header on it now and it is a straight through exhaust with a single muffler, no cataletic converter. There is no smog pump on it ( I dont know if it had one or not). I live in California and i not really up to date on smog laws and stuff. I know that 75 are now exempt. And im hoping by next year they will drop 76 off also. My question is, what am i going ot have to do to get it to smog? I know im gonna have to put a cat on it. Is it going to need a smog pump or air pump?

Any info will help!

there should be a sticker on the underside of the hood that lists what equipment is required for it. This will be tested under federal emissions standards if the car was originally not from CA. Federal standards are looser than CA standards. a lot of non- CA cars do not have smog pumps and all that BS. As long as the law doesnt change, the progressive "rolling" exemptions should make it exempt next year. if its low on your project list I would register it but put it on non-op until next year when its exempt.

before you throw down the money for it, take a battery and some good fuel with you. even if it just fires for a few seconds at least you can rest more easy if you know there is not a rod knock in it.

............. drop a small block in it.

The small block was the plan i started with. I already have all the stuff to do it with from a 240z i had before, steel crank 350 with mild cam, full manual 700r, long tube headers, drive shaft, i got everything. And im probably gonna pick the car up for about 350$.
I think its a pretty good deal. But yes i am gonna go back today with a battery and a couple tools and a jack to poke and job at if for a while, i want to drive it around the block first.

well if its a non CA vehicle (like my buddies) all it should have is an EGR and a smog pump. My buddies Z has the ports for the smog pump but no pump, his hood stikcer also says EGR whith air injection.
