I finally caved in and bought a dovetail car hauler. I mounted a winch to the front. What is the best way to power it? I had originally thought about mounting a battery box and a deep cycle battery, but some people run battery cables to the back of the tow vehicle.

What do you think?

Many trucks have a relay that powers a wire going to the 7 pin RV trailer plug. If you have it you could add a battery to the trailer and it would charge as you drive down the road.

I do have the 7 pin plug. I guess I'd have to make sure I unplugged it before I used the winch so I wouldn't cause a meltdown. :P

If you have a battery on the trailer you can leave it hooked up. It will recharge the battery wit the ignition on. If the previous owner didn't install the relay under the hood you might need to, check your owners manual.

The jack was definitely added. Poorly. No way it's on a relay currently. It's run through a thermal fuse and *I think* that goes straight to the battery. Shouldn't be too hard to make right though.

I leave a battery on my trailer, charge it occasionally. I have a 9000lb Warn winch and I rarely run the battery down even if it sits a long time without a charge. I have in the past used the cable connectors like they have on fork lifts and run cables to the rear bumper if I plan on keeping the tow pig for a while...

Is a deep cycle battery overkill? Will a regular truck battery do the job?

I had a regular battery forever, got a diesel battery on it now, but only because it was free...

If someone was going to use it a lot a lot of time, we ran welding cable to the back of the truck and had color coded female connectors, like welders use, mounted on the rear of the truck. The winch used color corded male connectors on shorter(but long enough to reach at any angle to the winch. You could use battery cable instead of welding cable. but this was for extra heavy duty.

The charging one in your trailer would work just fine. If you do not want to go to a 7 way camper plug, you can use your 4 way or 6 way plug and just add a 4 way plug for just the charging of the battery. That is what I do in my bed of my truck to use my gooseneck trailers and my 5th wheel camper. If you use a 6 way plug on other things, this would keep everything the same. I use 6 way trailer connector on everything I have, even if it only needs 4.

I do have adapters to hook up any type of connector they make. Too many years in the trailer business.

Grandmaster of the "Shade Tree" way.. I can't see the yard for all the cars. Come on down and we will sit on the porch and watch the grass grow.

Thanks for all the input, everyone.

I bought a deep-cycle battery today mostly because it was convenient. The wire connectors on the winch fit the terminals on the battery. It didn't cost that much more and I was short on time today. I haven't connected any kind of charging mechanism to it yet, but I will likely use the 7 blade since my truck is already equipped with it.

I drove 150 miles today to pick up a parts car for a little project I'm working on in my spare time. The winch made short work of it. I need to find a better place for the fairlead, but overall I'm pretty well satisfied.

I know you could have pulled up the wiring quickly but I just pulled this up. Refer to your owners manual to see Where the relay goes into the underwood box to supply power to the rear. I usually install mine when I buy a new truck.
