My kid ran the LUV out of oil. She says that it scared her when the truck "Skidded two times" as she was getting off the freeway. I think it probably seized, or tried to, but she made it the mile home. I checked (no oil) I filled it up and it ran fine, but now has an off again-on again knocking (like a sewing machine sound). It is only every so often. I don't think the Isuzu engine has rods...any ideas what might be making the noise? Ken 8O

It has rods. If it was ran out of oil and seized its time to pull it apart and rebuild it.

Luverv8 is right. A luv engine is a valve-piston interference engine. If your timing stuff went bad you would know it.
Valves hit the pistons.

Grandmaster of the "Shade Tree" way.. I can't see the yard for all the cars. Come on down and we will sit on the porch and watch the grass grow.

Is it possible to replace the bent rod without a complete tear down? Also, is there a way to tell if it is a journal or a rod? (I'm not a mechanic, I just play one on the weekends).

A bent rod will often cause oval wear in the cylinder.

The noise only comes when I get to about 2500 RPM.

It has the symptoms of a rod. I would never patch a job like this.

The odds that you've bent a rod are almost nill. Running out of oil will definitely cause a bearing failure. Locking up would be a rod or main ant the fact that it broke free quickly ls a blessing.
You may be able to rebuild it in the truck.
First thing I'd do is to drain the oil and remove the pan. Look for burned oil, discoloration (sp) around the rods and mains. Whichever rod or main, you can remove that cap and determine the damage. If the main has spun, then proceed tto pull the engine, you can't fix it correctly in the truck. Check them all. If any mains show movement of the bearing then it needs to be pulled. If its a rod you can remove the head and all of the pistons / rods. If the cylinder walls are withiin tolerance, light hone. Have machine shop check the rods and resize them. There should be a local crankgrinder in your area that can grind the crank thow .010 under on the bad journal.
put new bearings, good rings and reassemble.
While you're there check your chain and tensioners.

Truthfully I've found very few in car overhauls that were quick. Pulling and a complete tear down is best bet for the money.

partial teardown reviles the culprit of the noise.
purchased this truck from Veemanator, I though a few people might like to see what the bad bearing looked like. Pretty clear which one was having an issue.
