My son just turned 13. He'll be driving in just 3 years. Found a pretty cool deal on an old beetle. Rescued it from redneck hell. Hoping to teach him the value of sweat and elbow grease. Hopefully he'll treat it with respect if he has to work on it to get it running.

1971 Standard Beetle. 1600 DP engine. Body and interior are in surprisingly good shape. Floor pans are rusted to hell. We've got 3 years.

Almost had it running today. It tried

one of the few things I can think of that is easier to tinker with than a luv good choice 8)
plus those things are really entertaining, ever had one on a dirt road? :twisted:

Never been off road in one. I've had a couple of VWs in the past. You're right, very easy and simple to work on.

My son has a serious boner for a buddy's 66 mustang. I told him if he helped me get the body straight on this and we got it running right then we'd see about flipping it and buying that car. Gotta teach him the value of horse-trading too. Ha.

They have the floor pans for sale now, I have done both sides in a day. Not to sound old but back in the day when we had to make the pans it was a week deal as I am sure you know.

Yeah. The aftermarket is huge now. Have you bought any of the aftermarket pans? Anyone you recommend?

There's so much that needs to be done. The guy I got it from ran a speaker wire from the battery to the coil and a couple from the starter. The key does nothing. The wire harness appears to be all there and intact. Gonna get the test light and multimeter out over the next few weekends and check everything. Fortunately, there aren't many wires.

The valve stems didn't even have cores in them. None of them. It was fun rolling it off the trailer.

Great group of guys there. I live a few miles from there, a good friend is a top parts guy there. Check out how cheap the pans are now, like $50 per quarter.

Got it cranked just a little bit ago. Gave the distributor a twist 90 degrees clockwise and it fired right up. (Hotwired coil still)

Now to chase down some electrical demons. Pray for me.

This was my main fourm when I was doing a lot of air cooled VW stuff. I was there from it's binging

You are correct. The original pursets are hard toget all long with :D. Shoptalk is a whole different place. If you are into douring anything on VW check out volksrods.com i am the owner of yahoo group volksrods group. I just point them to the website. I have a chopped type squareback. They like chopped cut and weld.you can be a stock guy dune buggy guy or making a chooped whatever. If you are into custom severally modified VW aircooled stuff this is the place. Even a v8 bug. I was there in the first 50 people. Nothing like the samba. shoptalk and volksrods are the. Place to go. But do not forget all of us here!!!!!!!

I've learned a lot over the past few days. Lots of very knowledgable people in the VW community.

I'm going to try to figure out why the ignition switch does nothing this weekend. The driver side back glass is out and I suspect the voltage regulator has gotten soaked. Then I'm going to rebuild the carb and see if there's any salvaging the distributor. The mechanical advance is rusted and doesn't move freely.

I need to find a stock air cleaner. I'd like to find a year-accurate oil filled one.

After all that is done, I'm going to get the floor pans from the place that Karl recommended.

It's amazing how many people still dig these cars. I've already had a couple of offers on it. The body is pretty straight and mostly rust free. It won't take much to have it ready for paint.

My son was really wanting an old mustang to resto-mod, but he's kinda digging this now. I might get off easy. Ha.

I worked on these cars cor many years, if there s anything I can help with let me know. To free up the advance I usually but the drive claw in a vise, gently put vise grips on the top shaft where the rotor goes, WD40 or something like that in the shaft hole and rotate the grips back and forth. Usually within 3 minuets or so it's free, check the vacuum can. It it has a retard side it's most likely blown and leaking. Timing it the death of these air cooled engines, get it right and they run for a while.

Pretty sure it's just a single port distributor. No retard just advance. Will check for sure this weekend. I'll try to free it up that way. Might be next weekend. Had a death in the family and got folks flying in. I think I'm supposed to be around them or something. Never been good at that.

I was cleaning out the garage last night and came across my old "How to rebuild your aircooled vw engine" book. Somehow I'm missing page 135-137. If anyone has this book, can they send me a pic or scan of those pages? If not, I'll ask thesamba.com but knowing those guys I'll get 30 pages of reasons that book sucks.
