I just received a 1968 Dodge A-108 Camper Van and I found the original dealer order sheet in it and it list the rear axles as a 3600# Anti-Slip rear axle. I was told it might be a Dana 60 but it looks like the front pumpkin comes off like a ford 9 inch does. Can anybody tell me what this might be? or where to look for the numbers on it. The transmission is a A727 and it has a 1 barrel 318 in it. I am not very knowledgeable on Mopars. Thank for any help.

How many axle lugs? Sounds like an 8-3/4 though....

The number on the side of the pumpkin can be;
741 small pinion bearing, shaft, 8 3/4" ring gear.
742 larger pinion bearing, shaft, 8 3/4 ring gear.
488 Latter model small piniion bearing 8 3/4" ring gear.
489 Latter model large piniion bearing 8 3/4" ring gear.
Pinion gears, bearings do not interchange between these.
You want the 748 or 489 for maximum strenght.
All had Posi available. Tag on pumpkin bolt will give ratio and if posi.
Be aware these axles have tapered bearings and need to have the end play set on them. Easy way to tell if correct is; If you can feel it move, but cannot see it move then it's good. They do make conversion bearing kits that do away with the adjuster.
CAUTION: On the adjustable axles there is a center pin / block that the axles butt up against for end play. Just look into the side gear and you should see it.
These R/A were used in the 50's, 60's behind the Hemi's, 413 Stage II, III and the 440 engines, all have lots of torque.
Another nice thing is most of these the axles have the meat so that they can be shortened. Minor drawback is the 4 1/2" ford bolt pattern. Can be redrilled to 4 3/4" chevy pattern. The wheel centering hub is a different diameter than Ford or Chevy, so check when using stock wheels.
