Some one here has to have an answer. I did a quick search but came up empty.
I have a 1975 Luv with a 327 small block in it with a points distributor.
I'd like to swap the distributor with an HEI unit but I have clearance problems with the firewall.
A stock HEI unit (with the coil on the large cap) won't fit.
The 1975 thru 1979 HEI is a large cap design but uses a 4 pin module for ease of wiring.
Some of the later distributors have a smaller cap but use a 5 to 7 pin module which need a computer to operate. These can't be used.

Is there a better way of doing this or is an aftermarket distributor advisable?
I looked at Summit and there dist. kits are $169.00!

Thanks for any help.

Msd makes a small cap ready to run, but it is more than 169...

Swap your points for a petronix ignitor and buy a good coil . I prefer the MSD suggested earlier . Guessing if you cant fit a stock HEI then a aftermarket wont fit either .
Might look at these :

or at these .

Thanks for the replies!
$200.00 each! WOW!
I thought there might be something out there a bit cheaper.

What motor mounts are you running? Mine would fit an accel HEI with the hooker mounts and they are bolt in. If you were to make your own you could make more room. And still have plenty of room for a fan.

Thanks for the picture!
Your motor looks higher than mine. I also think yours is a bit further forward.

I am using a standard chevy motor mount (McQuay Norris #2142). The bracket is an aftermarket.
Let me look it up and I'll see who made it. It was a V-8 swap kit from California.

I'll take a couple of pictures of mine and post them.

I use the Hooker headers in my truck.
Did Hooker make a swap kit too?
I wasn't aware of that.
I did my swap in 1977 two years after I bought the truck new.
My father thought I was nutz! He had nothing to say when I backed it out of the garage 10 days later.

Are the adapters, gold iridited, and the headers chromed. I believe I know what kit you have. Email me for confirmation. Over a thousand of them sold. You do need to modify or bend the firewall some for an HEI. You can also notch the bolt holes in the adapter approx 1/4" and move the engine forward besides working the firewall. Also a 1/8" no more shim between the trans mount and adapter will help.

You can look at summit for a pertronics conversion for your points dist. Under $ 100.00 Another company is Stinger in Midway City, Calif. The pertronics is self contained where as the Stinger is a magnetic pickup installation with an extrenal box.

I just found out about Pertronix kit #1181. $65.26 with free shipping from Amazon. Good deal!
You use your old distributor, cap and rotor. Perfect and just what I was looking for.

The swap kit I have is from Chassis Engineering & Speed in Fullerton California.
I bought the kit in 1978! And yes, it had chrome exhaust headers.

Thanks again for the help! This is something I have wanted to do for 20 years!
