im working on gathering up parts for my 240sx project now that my LUV is running well enough to be my DD.
planning to drop in a 350.. stock for the time being, im planning on 350-400hp (so still stockish) when all is said and done.
im stuck in a debate over what transmission i should use.
i love manual transmissions so im thinking about a t5 or a t56 8O if i can find one for a reasonable price
but im also considering a 700r4 or 200r4 since the car is currently set up for auto trans (no clutch pedal assembly etc) im not very interested in th350 or th400 since they have no overdrive and i enjoy the top speed aspect as much as the acceleration
anyone who has experience with any of the above trannys feel free to chime in with your good or bad experience and info. i have looked up the gear ratios and all of the above will work for what i plan to do but i am having a hell of a time finding out which will last with abusive driving (but a light car).

i mostly plan to keep it on the road, some drifting, and racing friends, but mostly just to enjoy and turn some heads a v8 nissan rwd car  . with the occasional stop at Portland International Raceway for Wednesday night drags to see what kind of times i can put down

Man i had a 240sx that i bought almost new . it had the truck 4 cylinder and 5 speed . It was a great cat , got good if not great gas milage , was more reliable than a Timex and rode / drove / handled like a dream with cold air . I say butcher a mazda RX-7.

i wish i could have had some fun with the ka24e they come with. i sold the engine and tranny that came with the car so i could fix the LUV... so i figure it will be cheaper and more fun to buy a 350 and tranny and drop them in then getting another ka and tranny.. plus who has a 570sx? it would sound amazing coming down the road.
but i do agree a 350 rx7 would be epic.. but since i already have the 240 with no engine and needing a lot of work i might as well have some fun with it
im thinking a 700r4 or a t56... if i can find a t56 at pick n pull i will be set.. if not i will grab a 700r4 and a shift kit

that much better huh?
a 30% overdrive has to be a lot more enjoyable than 1:1 on the highway

Forget the 200; it won't handle the power for long.
The 700R4 can handle the power but again not for long. They were unreliable in the long run.
The turbo 400 would be the wya to go if you have the room for it. They are long.
The turbo 350 would be the best bet in the long run and cheapest too.
Be for warned and try to find one with a full complimeny of clutches in it.
Mine came out of a New York City taxi cab from a full size Chevy impala.
No prblems with it! Good luck!

700R4 will take 400 hp on street tires well . IMO the 200 4r has a better gear set . 1st is not as deep and overdiver is deeper . Tons of buick Dn , 442's regals , wagons , caprices' ( heavy cars ) had these . The 700 s 3.06 first is alot of mechanical advantage , but they work .

I'm with hotrod. I went with the 700 because it was available. A sunshell upgrade and good clutches make them at least as reliable as a t350...

700 will work great as long as you dont use sticky tires....then they break

I was a Chevy mechanis for 25 years and replaced a lot of 200's out of Caprices!
Just too much weight for that small tranny.

well i sold the 240 to a buddy.
so now im back to the luv. going to ditch the turbo equip i got and throw in a 4.3 V6..
pick n pull is having a 20% off engine sale until Christmas so Im gonna go try and get myself a present :)

hoping i can find a good engine and tranny in a wrecked S series truck or astro van to haul home with me. anyone know what year they switched from the 700r4 to the 4l60e? i want to grab the 700r4 so if i ever decide to ditch the TBI system i wont have tranny issues.

from what i read the 700r4 got a name change but didnt physically change for another 2 years or so. somewhere between 92-94 they changed to the pcm controlled one. i just gotta find a 91 or older engine/trans and i should be good to go.
i have 3 months to get it done so im trying to get it all gathered up and ready to drop in asap
