guys, i changed the ignition switch on my buddy's wife's van today, (An 03 honda odyssey) and the whole thing went off without a hitch, but now the anti-theft device won't allow the van to run for more than 3 or 4 seconds.

The new ignition lock cylinder/switch assembly came with two new keys and a barcode tag. do i have to take the entire van to the dealer to flash the keys, or can i take just the old switch and keys? what exactly is involved here? i've never had to deal with any anti theft system....

HELP!!!!

The entire van has to go and be programmed.

CAH-WRAPPP!!!! i was really hoping to avoid that.... that means it has to be towed about 25 miles to get it to the closest dealer....

yeah, we disconnected the batt before doing anything. (had to disable the air bag system too)

once we connected everything back together, we reconnected the batt but since the keys have transponders in them (i don't see how though) the van has to be programmed to accept the new keys i guess (strange considering how we changed both the ignition lock cylinder and switch together at the same time. it's one complete assembly)

Removing the battery does not do shit. the moniters get erased and that is about it. It IS NOT A RESET of any kind. And the van does need to go to the dealer to get reprogramed. And if anyone wants to debate about the battery deal, pm me and bring facts, I have mine ready.

but then again the question remains. what is the dealer going to do that i cannot do myself here with simple procedures? its going to be a HUGE cost to him to get the van towed to the stealer- i mean dealer to get this sorted out!

since the new switch and lock cylinder came together, it only makes sense that something else is to blame. it doesn't make sense as to what exactly is happening...

It has to be programmed by the dealers computer to mesh with the cars computer. If the cars computer does not recognize the switch it will noot let the car run. I just took oa Honda to the dealer fridday for the same thing.

so here is the basics of the security system of that van

YES. pulling the batt will not allow the key to reprogram itself. There is no "Learning mode"

NO. It did NOT have to go the dealer to get done.

as it turns out, the entire switch assembly has a small key transponder receiver (looks like a ring with a box around it)
it sits right over the lock cylinder to read the key that is inserted.

Turns out that the switch assembly that i got from work did not have that ring matched to the key. (this was confirmed by using the old ring and key and placing the key through the ring while connected to the harness and using the new key to turn the van on.) This time it stayed on.

After taking the switch assembly back and getting it warrantied, we installed it again, and lo and behold. the van ran just fine.

ALSO. according to the lock smith we spoke to, the design of the van's key really doesn't allow for those keys to have alot of weight on it.
(My buddy's wife had almost a good pound of keys and keychains on there)

moral of the story: don't trust the dealer, and don't carry so much weight on the keyrings!

How about this: Get the new key flashed to match what's in the van's computer! Or if they can't flash the key, get another one made, and have IT flashed to match the computer.

Around here (Memphis) some of the good locksmith shops can do chipped keys, so you save a lot over going to the dealer.

Edit: Oops. I see this is already resolved now. But I think we agree, a knowledgeable locksmith is the right answer.

Ah, the LUV! I am just glad I live where all this security stuff isn't worth the bother. I hate the theft deterrent features of my 02 Cavalier. Come on, who is going to steal it?
