Fail! Went in for an alignment on my wife's Suburban on Friday morning. Got the song and dance about the idler arm/pitman arm badly worn, and ALL the wheel bearing needing replacing. $537 estimate on parts and installation, then the alignment.

I said, no thanks. Arrived home and took a look. I did replace the pitman and idler, even though they seemed good. Nada on the bearings though, they were fine, repacked the bearings, took the pass rotor in and got it turned, new seal for both sides, new pads, etc. Total cost was $84 and change. Got it aligned later Friday, NOT @ first shop, lol.. $64.00

Shop total = $601
Doing it myself = $150

Having been in the repair business for myself before, I don't mind a profit, but charging triple price on bearings it doesn't need was NEVER done by me, and I won't be back in their establishment period...

Same thing happened to me when I took my wife's blazer in for an alignment. The said the idler arm was shot and wanted $150 for the part and 3 hrs labor at $75 an hour to put it on. Told them thanks but no thanks, went to NAPA and bought an arm for $20, and put it on in less than an hour. The old arm seemed fine to me.

I called them back and let them know I changed it and they told me to bring it on in for the alignment. I told them I was going to take it to a different shop, but I just wanted to let them know that the defective part was replaced.

Screw those guys.

luckily my truck has not graced the floor of any shop other than my garage :p scary to think what the price tag for labor would be for the nearly $2k or parts i have put into it!

Yea the labor is getting out of control...and the false diagnosis. I bought a diesel a few years ago and didnt know a damn thing about them. I have had a few minor problems and what seemed a simple fix was unbelievable to fix at a shop. Internet is a great thing sometimes..lots of great forums out there like this one. I had a wheel bearing go out (f250 4x4 has a sealed hub)..the estimate total was $350+ I did a search online, got a plan, and gathered up the nessary tools. Spend $125 on the hub and LITERALLY took 10 mins to get apart. I finished the job and beer or two in 45 mins.

I just bought a Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4, the kid I bought it from had a $2800 estimate. I tore it down today in 2 hours, ordered parts and should have it done in about 4 working hours and a total of $410 in parts. I paid $375 for the car, not bad for a little twin turbo AWD car.

yeah, been having alot of that coming into our store.

lots of the local shops like big o and les schwab quoting RIDICULOUS prices for them to pull parts and then scratch their balls or something.

i keep telling my customers:

"THE INTERNET IS NOT JUST FOR PORN!"

But then again, it's the stupid ones that shouldnt even be driving when they don't even know what YEAR or MAKE of car they drive!

"TO THE SHOP WITH YE!"

Years ago Pop took his car and bought some tires from a major tire store. He was going to get a front alignment too. The shop said he need ball joints, a frame bushings etc. As a mechanic his whole life, and already replaced a lot of that already on his Pontiac, he just said don't worry about that. We all ROTFLOAO. Stupid guy...

This was like 1969.... No change for some places.

I bought a 2000 Jeep cherokee in Ft. Lauderdale, FL from a shady used car dealership. I drove 150 miles to his dealership to get this jeep (apparently, FL doesn't have many 4x4s.) 2 miles away from his shithole, the jeep broke down. He said he'd take it to the shop that works on his vehicles. Came back 2 weeks later and the shop owner comes out and tells me it was the front driver's driveline that was BROKEN!!!! I was like wtf? Looked under there and it looked like the dude pulled it out, painted it grey, and threw it back in. Then continued to try to charge me $400 for it. The used car dealer paid for half though. but I just wanted to get my shit and go home. again, 2 miles away it broke down. Told the shop to come pick it up. Turns out it was a clogged tranny filter. $20 dollar fix. I was fed up and had my jeep transported to my dorm for $400. I wasn't about to drive down there again.

Moral of the story, if I was back in Florida, I'd break my damn driveline.... Over both of their F*cking heads!

yeah...
thank god for the internet!!!
i have learned EVERYTHING i needed to knwo about my luv and how to work on it from my haynes manual, this site and ozgemini.com if not for those 3 sources the $2500 that in into my truck with brand new motor, weber, and pretty much everything gone through would be damn near $10,000 by now!!! i will NEVER take it to a shop other than for a dyno run. i dont think there is any reason to pay someone to tell me what i can find online for free.99 and 5 minutes of my time. and then pay $200 to fix instead of $2500 for parts and labor

I took my car in for an alignment once (replaced front struts so it was running on the outside of the tire) and they said my lower ball joint was bad. I also had one of the wheel studs stripped so they wanted to fix that too. So they wanted to charge me $810 to fix all of that ($10 for the stud and $108 for the ball joint) so I went to NAPA and bought my ball joint for $20 and replaced it in 5 minutes since all it does is bolt on literally and a stud for like $1 and replaced that in another 10 min. Stupid shops.............

sadly these days there are enough people who have no idea how to operate a wrench.
and have even less of an idea of how a car works besides, insert gas, turn key, press pedal, go. for shops to charge that much money for $30 jobs. was it $118 or $810? i hope it was supposed to be $118!!!

After I lifted my jeep, I went to get an alignment and some tires put on rims and they charged me $200. Shop time in Alaska is $130/hr though.
