hey guys, the other day, i was driving the luv on my delivery runs, and i noticed that the engine was dying under load. while driving down a stretch of road, it bogged and restarted on it's own by me varying the amount of pressure i had on the gas pedal. (pumping the gas) it would run just fine for a minute, then die the next.

i looked at the float on the carb, and saw that i had a low amount of fuel in the bowl.

so im wondering, could this be an issue of the fuel pump going out due to cold weather, or is it just due to tired pump life?

and if i do replace, i found a "universal" bracket mount fuel pump that's rated at 3-4 PSI and another for 5 to 7. if i use the higher psi pump, would it cause a problem with the carb being the age it is to start leaking, or should i just stay with a stock pressure?

engine is stock, blah blah. etc.

I would stick to the stock pressure. You could also have trouble with the float sticking.

How cold was it when the problem happened? I have had my fuel pump freeze in sub-zero weather before, have always run gas line antifreeze during winter since then. You may have a little moisture in the fuel.
The valve that pulls warm air into the air cleaner hasn't worked for years, when driving at highway speeds in cold, damp weather the lower carb body and the adjoining top of the intake manifld will sometimes form frost on the exterior, until I pull over, idle for a few minutes to let the under-hood temps come up and melt the frost it will cut out very badly.
I am on my second parts store fuel pump, it works fine. Often when the pump goes bad you can hear it.

i dunno it was supposed to be a high temp of only 19 deg, but i feel like it was warmer than that. (of course im not the best judge of temp. if it's colder than 40 degrees, it's all cold to me :))

i ran the truck to work today and it seemed like the truck ran with no problems. i feel like i almost want to just change it out just to say it's done, but what do you guys think? just add some moisture remover to the tank on next fill up?
