Ok so I'm close to having mt 1980 4x4 chevy luv running I'm sure of it but here is the problem I'm having.. The truck runs great when its just running off the battery but when I hook up the wire on the positive terminal to the lights and alternator it back fires , runs slow, and I can't shift out of 1 . I've replaced the voltage regulator, all the battery terminal cables I'm fresh out of ideas please point me in the right direction.

Sounds like you may have a bad alternator. To find out, loosen the neg. battery cable, then start up the truck. With the truck running, walk over to the battery and (with all accessories and lights off) pull off the negative battery cable. If the engine dies, your alternator is bad. If not, its something else.

Hope this helps! :ebiggrin

Start at the alternator with the heavy wire and follow it to the fuse box and battery. It should always be hot. If not, you have a bad connection somewhere.
