hey guys, i'm still in tucson, and we have uncovered a very unfortunate situation.

i noticed that for every 200 miles the engine runs, we use about a quart of oil. im sure i dont have to tell you, that's not good.

i plan to either rebuild or replace the motor when we get back to salt lake, depending of course on how bad the compression figures are.

i figure that i will need main bearings, piston rings, (and pistons depending on condition) a head gasket set, (intake, exhaust etc.)

what parts will i need to get the rebuild done?

Switch to High Mileage oil, and maybe a heaver weight if you need to. People with VW Vanagons have to use xx-50 oil so they do not get the oil light coming on when they exit a freeway and such things, the engines are not wore out. My 40k mile engine in mine Vanagon I use it. STP can help too. I did see a plant factory yard only truck,, use only 90 weight gear oil in the engine. :( .

Grandmaster of the "Shade Tree" way.. I can't see the yard for all the cars. Come on down and we will sit on the porch and watch the grass grow.

i plan to check out the compression figures, but i wont know what they are right now.

for me, changing the grade of oil will only temporarily solve the problem.

i just need to know what parts i will need to replace when i do this. it's been a long while since i did a total engine rebuild

You could start with a kit to get most of the items.

I dont know anybody that has succesfully rebuilt a geo motor. most just pull and drop, as its usually not worth it to try and rebuild.

is this a XFI model GEO??

you may know all this, but.....

XFIs are a early 90s only, ALL ARE
2 door,
two ring pistons,
difrent cam,
difrent final gear,
and are all a manual trans, if its a lousy auto trans in a XFI, its a swap.

trying to find one of these to replace one, is near imposable.

well, for the moment, the engine is going to get an oil change to a thicker grade like what was recommended, and hopefully that will allow the engine to last us at least until next year. if nothing else, im going to ATTEMPT to use a honda engine and trans as a custom swap. who knows? maybe i will get lucky !
