i picked up a 1980 for parts a few months back. took what i needed, sold the rest.

today i get in the mail a letter from the Department of Revenue saying ive never titled the truck. which is true. but i bought it for parts and no longer have the title or the truck.

do i still have to title it? its already accumulated some penalties as it is ...

In Iowa you can go to the court house and get a junk title. Not sure if you need the title when doing that, but am guessing you do???

If the truck went to the junk you might try to call the court house and tell them. Not sure if that will do any good or not, but worth a try.

How did they find out you never titled the truck? I've done the same thing here in NC, bought parts vehicles, used what I needed and sold the rest for scrap or not titled a vehicle I bought untill I actually but it on the road which in some cases has been a few years and never heard from anyone about not titling a vehicle. Thats kind of strange unless someone reported you, that would be the only way I could figure the state would know.

where is the truck now is it scrap now or did you sell it to someone if it is in the scrap yard it is up to them to take care of it you need to talk to the DVM or the court and tell them you got rid of it as it cost more to get it up to date than it was worth that is what i have done here in Cali not that the laws are the same but just might be close

some states make you hand over a title, to take a auto or trailer in for scrap or a reaking yard.

other wise you can not take a auto in for scrap.

un less you completly destroy it beond what a auto looks like.

in Oregon
if you put your name on the title you must get it title in your name then the other person sings that title and sends in the title.
OH thats $76.00 now :(

well what i think happen is the truck is still in her name and the court sent her a letter and she said she sold it and now it is on you to talk to the court and tell them it is gone you had to get rid of it for you had no place to keep it and you might have to sign a paper to show you don't have it no more best bet is to talk to the big man court just to clear you up that crap can stay with you for ever

when i parted out my civic, i kept the title.

the state of california called me several months later, and all i had to do was write a letter explaining what happened and i surrendered the tittle to them.

havent heard anything back from them since!

the general rule is that if you sell or scrap a vehicle, make a photocopy of the tittle and keep it in your records.

Yea, I agree, but for some reason people can't even seem to keep the title to the vehicle they drive every day! It's like owners manuals. It's in the glove box, leave it there! Why do they get lost? Spare tires and tire tools also. Why are you on the side of the road with out these things? Idiots. OK. I feel better now.
