Ok, so today getting on the on ramp to the I-10 I slammed on the gas in my car and i just heard the engine, but no moving.. I managed to get off the freeway and I saw that my differential was cracked and split in two pieces.. :esurprised
How on earth can that happen? Can I just push it back in place and weld it shut? :P or will I have to get it replaced?
here are some pics so you can kind of get an idea of what i am talking bout..
any info would really help out, for I am left with out a car right now.. :(

I was gonna say, I've never seen that happen to a LUV. :)

At any rate, you sure don't see that very often on ANY car. Do a lot of drag racing?

I'm in shock...is that a broken Ford 9" I see?

Yeah get a 10.5" 14 bolt rear out of a Chevy 1 ton pickup.

In all seriousness it looks like the pressed in axle tube just came out, so I bet you could have that welded back in. It probably caused 1 axle shaft to disengage, and so the diff is just freewheeling now, as if one tire was on ice.

I have never seen one do that before but you have nothing to lose by pushing it back together, Make sure you clamp it with two different straight edges to hold it straight, (there is alignment procedures for fixed axles, but it would take me a book to write, I have only ever welded on one before years ago with my father) and weld away. I would remove it to do this and probably check the internal workings as well. Good luck!!

hmmmmm.. I think I might just go ahead and do that. But first I need the luv running again. Would it be easier to take off the differential completely? or just weld it on where it is, just make sure its straight?

The best way to repair it. Take it apart, check everything. Take the cleaned housing to Cooks machine, they are on the side street that runs parallel with the five freeway near north of montebello. Old green barn looking building. Jim has the fixtures to make sure it is welded square. If you need a phone number email tech@powerbyace.com and you can get it during the day.

Ok, so this is the email I got back..

Jose,
You do not want to try and repair this yourself, if you do not have a
fixture to get it straight. Also because of the axle oil you will need to
get it clean. Hot tank or hot water and degreaser at you local mini car
wash. Cooks may clean it for you for a good price. The other option is to
get another housing if you know what that one came out of. It's hard to
find yards willing to separate parts now days. Currie's in anaheim may
have something also, however they are EXPENSIVE. Recommend you call Jim at
Cooks first.
The company name is
Cooks Machine
4845 Telegraph Rd
L.A., CA
310 268 6571

I guess I'll try giving them a call tomorrow.. Hope all my money doesnt go to this, I sure would like to have some left for my b-day. :esmile

It is money well spent if you take it to the shop and have it welded by people who have the fixtures and jigs to due it right and it will be stronger when done also this would be a good tome to weld on a back brace for further strength witch you could do if you have a welder.
