A friend has a '95 Geo Tracker with a 1.6l 16 valve engine. The timing belt broke, does the valves hit the pistons when that happens or is there enough clearance? Thanks.

That is a tough one to know. I know the little sewing machine '95 1.0L Geo Metro was an interference engine. '95 is about the last year that companies made engines that were listed as interference. They are almost all ("freewheeling" I believe is the term) after '96 to avoid valve to piston contact with this problem. I probably didn't give much help, he is right on the cutoff of the time most companies switched to Freewheeling engines. To bad they didn't in '87....a siezed pulley broke my timing belt and ruined my "190,000 mile $600 drove it for 3 years 32 MPG toyonova".

i have the other verson of this auto, the 4 door sidekick

mine is a 1993 1.6 V16 EFI engine, and yes valves will hit the pistons if the belt brakes.

I dont know why, but the geo SUVs are much more commen with the 8V 1.6L for some odd reson.

the 16V have deep holes in the middel of the rocker cover, to get to the spark plugs, about 5"

the 8V engines have there spark plugs to the side of the rocker cover.

Another question on the Geo Tracker. I put the timing belt on it and it ran fine for 2 or 3 months. The other day it started running rough. She also said that it started using oil and anti-freeze but can't confirm that yet. #3 cylinder is dead. Had good compression, the same has the other 3 cylinders. Thought maybe it might be a bad injector so I switched a couple and it didn't make a difference. It has the 1.6L 16 valve. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

well, that does sound like a head gasket. might as well dig in and find out whats happening in there.

if i remember correctly, the piston will indeed hit the valves, that is if the clearances were not set correctly.

if you intend to keep the car, you might as well just do a top end rebuild and service the cooling system

I did a leak down test and had air blowing out the exhaust. So the head is coming off.

i found that on the passenger side of the engine, there seems to be a falt "mabe" :?:
mabe its just the ones i have, there all sold 92/93 ive heard things where changed/upgraded in 94/95 and agen in 96

i have three 1.6L bottem ends from 92/93, that weep a very small amount from around slug 1 or 2 (rear of engine) on the side.
figure its right from the water jaket,
thus no oil in the water, or vice versa.

its much easer to just pull the trans / engine all at once, LBs is very little being all alloy engine and trans housing.

i can pick up the head/block of the engine for a short time.
its only 150LBs at most with ALT P\S stuff ECT on it.
trans 125LBs or less.

drane gas tank down if you can as well, or find some thing to plug lines
when the frunt drive shaft is pulled from the trans, all the oil goes on the ground  i know

ill work on photos of my spare engine, and my parts auto, will not be any day soon.
