My freind just got a short block '76 400, it has heads with #333882 I looked up some info and they have 1.94 intake 1.5 exht 76cc. Are these worth anything? I don't know much about them?

Decent stock head. Most any aftermarket head is better though...

Agree...882s are fine for being stock...but dont spend a whole lot money on them...they will never compare to an aftermarket head..

He might keep them and save for a different short block, is there another "stock" head that will perform better? :?

Vortec's, but they are for a smaller engine than a 400. If the 882's are in good shape, I'd just run those...

If I'm not mistaken there are also other Chevy SBC heads with 68cc and 72cc combustion chambers which would give you more compression. But airflow and porting being what they are, I agree that aftermarket will perform better.

for what the cost of aftermarket heads have become for a SBC its almost pointless to use the stock ones for a performance rebuild anymore. With both Summit and Jegs selling aluminum setups - flat tappet or roller ready, for under 900 bucks? how could you loose? thats what you would pay for a set of performance stockers!

when its as common and as simple as a SBC, might as well..... unless looking belly button stock is your thing.

These heads are basically the same as almost all sbc heads from 73-on (up to the center bolt heads), 1.94 X 1.5 or 1.6, should give you a compression ratio of about 9-1 with stock 350 dished pistons. You can pull an easy 300-350 HP out of them, with a Edelbrock manifold, 600 cfm carburetor, headers, free flow exhaust, and a small 260-270 degree (advertised duration) hyd flat tappet cam.
Another very inexpensive way to go is to exchange them for a set of 85 305 heads. Although the 305s have smaller valves, they do have a much smaller combustion area, (less cc's), these wil get your compression up around 10-10.5 to 1.
I agree that the way to go is the very inexpensive aluminum heads now available, but you will not get the all out horsepower that you can with reworked, flowed steel heads! I'm sure many people will disagree with this, but do a little research and you will find that the aluminum heads have a very large "cool" spot in the compression area, and they just aren't as efficient as all out-race prepared steel heads, but theyare lighter, easier to work with. And a lot of people will give up the hp loss in exchange for less weight, and appearance.
I state the above not to argue with anyone, just an educated point of view.
Good luck,
scjconv

If your just on the street, then don't go bigger than the 1.94 intake, 1.6 exhaust. Better mid range. You want some good stock heads look for the 350hp 350 heads from the late 60's to early 70's. Or a set of camel hump heads.

Double humps were one of the best older heads made. The came in the 1.94 intake, 1.50 exhaust and the 2.02, 1.60 exhaust

461
462
186
291
492
041x

Casting # Last 3 numbers.
I always meant to build a set with 1.94 intake and 1.60 exhaust. I thought bigger exhaust valve would not hurt like performance than the bigger intake on a less hp engine. You need to keep up the intake flow at a high speed as possible. Big Valves hurt that unless you have the rest to go with it.

I do not remember what flow were were able to get on the big valve ones... 30 years ago :o

882's are the best of the worst heads or the worst of the best heads. I ported a set of 882's and they worked very well but in most cases a set of stock Vortex's will out perform most ported stock iron heads.Do what you budget will let you do and remember that that on the street max horse power almost never comes in to play while driving so build to your intended purpose and have fun.

So since these heads are for my freinds engine. I passed along all the info you have shared. He has decided to just sell the short block as is. So if any one is interested in a 76 400 short block. let me know :)

still have it, We really don't know much about the running condtion of it. So my freind was going to have it rebuilt.
I just want to get it out of my way, since I have been storing it for him :x and he has no money to do anything with it.
