Well I finally got around to start putting the inner springs back in my heads to finish the valve stuff. What a pain. I got a tool for it but it is a nightmare getting the retainers back on after putting in the inner spring.
I can't get the poly lock back on without my wife holding down the spring while I put the polylock back on the stud. Then I can compress the spring to put in the retainers which is a chore also
Is there a certain trick to it or do I need a different tool other than the kind of spring compressor. I just have the bent metal one.
I have 2 cylinders done and that is all in two nights. Got to be an easier way or am I missing something on how to do it,

I have a tool that screws into the sparkplug hole. You hook an air line to it and it holds pressure against the valve. Then I have another tool that slips over the head stud and is held in place with the rocker arm nut. You pull over on the tool to compress the spring. THis tool is an old K-D tool that is similar to a set of vise grips, in that you can set it to a certain point and when you pull over, it will lock in place leaving both hands free. IDK if they are still available...

It is a pain in the butt. I put new springs on my engine last winter. The heads were on the engine but the engine was out of the truck and on an engine stand. I had to have my wife help me on few too. I have a tool similar to you mytmouz but it doesn't lock in place. It is homemade, I copied from a buddy who I used about 3 years ago.

I just didn't think one would have to put the tool on, take the spring out and install the inner and then put the compressor back on again. My big problem is getting the tool back on and holding it down far enough compressing the spring to get the poly lock threaded back on.
I had to buy new roller rockers too. Mine were rubbing on the retainers on the top and were on the side of the rocker outside next to the roller.
I can only stand doing one cylinder at a time for now until my son comes over to help.

Will this work for solid cams also. Still haven't found a new roller rocker to clear my retainers. Bought a new set and they rest on the back of the retainer when the valves are closed.
Might just have to use my cranes again but round off the side next to the rollers were they hit the retainer next to the valve. If I knew this would have been this much of a problem I would have kept the cast heads and valve train I had before.
Still working on gettin the inner springs in.

Small Block Chevy Valve Adjustment Order 0 deg TDC, both number one valves shut.

Adjust the #1 exhaust valve

Adjust the #1 intake valve

Adjust the #3 exhaust valve

Adjust the #5 intake valve

Adjust the #7 intake valve

Adjust the #2 intake valve
Adjust the #4 exhaust valve
Adjust the #8 exhaust valve
Now rotate the engine 360 degrees. The mark on the balancer should be back at the TDC mark. Keep in mind that this is not the TDC where #1 would be firing! It's where #6 would fire.
Adjust the #3 intake valve
Adjust the #5 exhaust valve
Adjust the #7 exhaust valve
Adjust the #2 exhaust valve
Adjust the #4 intake valve
Adjust the #6 exhaust valve
Adjust the #6 intake valve
Adjust the #8 intake valve

I always used about 5 feet of 1/4 clothes line.

drop the piston to the bottom of its stroke, then feed the clothes line into spark plug hole, leaving a few inches hanging out plug hole. Then slowly rotate engine to compress all of the string aganst the heads and valves.

now do your valve spring work, no question about loosing a vlave in the hole.
