My 99 Subaru Legacy, the insturment lights (and also lights up the shifter controls) won't come on. There is a dimmer switch on the left lever on the steering column, but I tried that and no luck. The head lights and my fogs turn on though. The Haynes manual I have is not very helpful in this area.

im not to sure but whats the fuses look like? If it pops id check for good ground in the tail lights. Most cars intrument lights are on the same circuit with the tail lights

Ditto.
I think that is supposed to tell you the taillights are not working because the fuse is out.

I checked all the fuses, and they looked fine. I will check to see if the taillights come on or not.

I checked all the tailights, brake lights, and bake-up lights. I also tried moving the dimmer switch back and forth.
I went ahead and checked all the fuses. None are blown. Could it be a relay?
Anyone else got any ideas on what to check?

Get yourself a test light and start by checking for power at the dimmer switch.

Dimmer switch should only effect the headlights. All lights do go through the headlight switch or relays controlled by the headlight switch.

When I say dimmer swtich I refer to a switch that fades the lights to the instruments.

I will have to inspect the steering column more and see about using a tester light. The dimmer swtich is actually on the left lever (same lever as turn signals), so I may have to trace some wiring, not sure if the lever just pops out.
Oh how I wish I had a good shop manual.

I ended up having my mechanic take a look at it. There's a box inside the steering column, some type of electronic controller. It was bad. Dearlship part only, $100 plus tax. At least the total labor will to diagnose the problem and replace the part is an hour and a half. =)

Not to hijack this thread, but my '95 Pontiac Bonneville started doing the same thing the other day. Checked the fuses last night and they are good. All the other lights are working fine. I was also thinking light switch also.
