So mechanic guy said we have a blown head gasket, and buddy says the head probably is'nt warped, and having it machined is'nt really in the budget, so Couldnt we just replace the gasket?
At least until lol, something else goes wrong?

And when/ if we do, what sort of sealant do we use?

Unless you really like changing head gaskets you need to resurface the head regardless of what the machinist says then run a few heat cycles then re torque the head and it should last along time oh and put the gasket on dry.

If you keep blowing head gasket then check the block for warpage.

A new head gasket with a fresh machined head will require NO SEALANT. again, a re-torque is a must.

how did he determine its blown. if its not making white smoke, got milkshake or bubbles in the overflow can then it could be something else. have you done a compression test? have you tried pressurising the water jacket?

Im wondering about how much shops usually charge to resurface a head
And how does one go about pressuring the water jackets?

Around here it's $15.00 to $25.00 to surface the head.

O really? Nice, I was thinking it'd be like $200 or some shit. Said mechanic dude said it would be like a $1000 job to pull the head and machine it and put a new gasket and all that jazz, pardon my language but Fck that!

As far as re-torquing head bolts goes, am I right in thinking that 76-later motors you can just remove the valve cover to get to all the bolts, but 72-75 you have to remove the cam carrier as well as the valve cover which requires disconnecting the timing chain, and a lot more work? This is what it looks like to me, have always wanted to make sure mine are torqued up, but there are some bolts I can't seem to get to. :esad
